The English they arrived there only in 1670 and the colony broke away from that of the north in 1729, becoming autonomous and politically dominated by landowners and democrats. On February 5, 1778, South Carolina was the second state to ratify the first constitution of the United States, after Delaware, which is in fact nicknamed The First State. Entered as a State of the Union on May 23, 1788, between 1789 and 1840 its policy was dominated by long disagreements between the small owners and the aristocrats who owned Charleston. South Carolina was also the first state to secede from the United States to form the Confederate States of America; this caused the outbreak of the US Civil War, the first battle of which took place at Fort Sumter, which is located on an island in Charleston Bay.
