Casamance (in Portuguese: Casamança, from the Malinké language expression Kasa mansa which means King of the House) is a region of Senegal centered on the homonymous river.

Background

Casamance was subject to the colonial interests of France is Portugal before defining a border which was negotiated in 1888 between the French colony of Senegal and Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau) to the south. Portugal lost possession of Casamance, then their colony's main trade.

In lower Casamance, at the end of the 15th century, the kingdom of Kasa (also known as Kasanga) developed. The area, between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century, fell under the rule of the Kaabu empire.
