Celebes' difficult terrain and enormous size (174,600 km²) mean that the island has a great diversity of peoples and cultures. It was not until around 1910 that the area of the Torajas colonized by the Dutch. Several languages are spoken and people profess Christian, Muslim, Hindu and animist faith (not to mention the various mixtures of these).

More than 50 languages are spoken on Celebes and surrounding islands, including Makassarese, Buginese, Toraja and Gorontalee. For many Indonesian is the second language and as a national language the most important language for mutual communication.

By plane
Celebes' main gateway is Makassar, which has frequent flights all over the archipelago. manado acts as a secondary hub, with some direct flights to Singapore and some interesting connections east to halmahera and Irian Jaya.
Travel around
By plane
The immense size of Celebes and the poor condition of the roads make the plane the preferred mode of transport. Flights radiate from Makassar and manado to all places on the island.
By bus
The Trans Sulawesi Highway extends over a distance of more than 3900 kilometers and connects Makassar with Manado. Despite its pretentious name, the road is narrow, winding, dangerous and only partially finished.

Central Sulawesi is plagued by sporadic ethnic violence, with bombings and violent riots in Poso, palu and Tentena as militant Christian and Islamic factions fight. South Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi also experienced some anxiety. North Sulawesi is generally quiet.
