Chake-Chake is the second largest city and the unofficial capital of Pemba Island in theZanzibar archipelago in Tanzania.

Understand

Built in XVIe century by the Portuguese, Chake-Chake was also the capital of the short-lived Pemba People's Republic. Without much tourist interest, the city is nevertheless a central point for visiting the island of Pemba and an obligatory point of passage if you arrive there by plane.

On a boat

There is no regular line that docks at Chake-Chake but, if you arrive in dhow or with a pleasure boat, be aware that the concrete jetty and in very poor condition is only accessible during high tide.

By public transport

Coming from Mkoani, destination of ferries from Zanzibar City, must take the daladala where the basi noto 603. Coming from Wete, the largest locality on the island, you have to use the no 606.

Please note that you will not find an automatic ticket machine (ATM) neither in Chake-Chake nor on the whole of Pemba Island since 2012 and the closure of the Barclays Bank by Chake-Chake. The only ways to get Tanzanian shillings are either in a travel agency or in your hotel with a fairly high exchange commission or at the People's Bank of Zanzibar with a lower commission.
