Northern Chile (Norte in Spanish) is a touristic-geographical region of the Chile.

The region of northern Chile or norte, it can be considered composed of Norte Grande and from Norte Chico.

The Norte Chico corresponds to the regions of Atacama and Coquimbo. It stands out for the production of pisco (local distillate) and for the extraction of minerals.

Geographical notes

Characterized by an extremely dry climate, the northern region of Chile embraces coastal deserts and a 3,000-meter plateau dotted with brackish basins, the so-called salares.

The plateau is dominated by the Andes and by numerous volcanic cones among which that of Salmaja stands out on the border with the Bolivia.

  • 4 Calama - At the center of a copper mining area, Calama is a city in full development but with few guarantees from the point of view of personal safety.
