Iquique is a city of Chile, located in the far north region.
To know
Background
In 7,000 BC the area where Iquique stands today was inhabited by the Chango people
During the colonial period, Iquique was part of the Viceroyalty of Peru. The economic development of Iquique was largely due to the discovery of mineral deposits, in particular large deposits of sodium nitrate in the Atacama Desert, then part of the territory Peruvian.
In July 1835 Charles Darwin stayed in Iquique and described it as a city lacking in basic necessities such as water and firewood that had to be transported from far away places.
In 1879 territorial disputes between the Chile on the one hand and Bolivia is Peru on the other hand, they resulted in an armed conflict that has gone down in history as saltpetre war (1879-1884). The battle of Iquique was fought in the city port on May 21, 1879 and the victory went to the Chilean forces who were able to annex this portion of the Peruvian territory. The Battle of Iquique is commemorated annually as the Navy Day and is a national holiday in Chile.
Exports of Chilean saltpeter, mainly to European countries, contributed significantly to the economic development of Iquique.
In December 1907, the city was devastated by the massacre of the Santa María de Iquique school when the Chilean army, under the command of General Roberto Silva Renard, opened fire on thousands of miners who had barricaded themselves inside the school to protest against working conditions.
The Mars 96 probe was launched on November 16, 1996 but due to a failure at the fourth stage of the carrier rocket it re-entered the Earth's atmosphere a few hours and ended up in the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of Iquique. There were 200 g of plutonium on board and it is assumed that they are now somewhere in an area 320 km in diameter about 30 km off the coast of Iquique, Chile.
Iquique has been devastated by frequent earthquakes, the latest being in 2005 and 2014.
