Civitanova Marche (Citanò in Civitanova dialect) is a city of 42,251 inhabitants of the Marche of the province of Macerata.

To know

Civitanova Marche is a popular destination for shoppers in the footwear sector who usually go to one of its outlets at affordable prices. It stands out above all for being a sought-after seaside destination, maximizing revenues and presences in the summer period. It is also well arranged geographically, which makes it an excellent starting point for an active holiday: the state road 77 connects it to the villages of the interior of Macerata and Umbria, towards the Sibillini Mountains and the A14 motorway connects it to the north and south to the rest of the Marche coast.

The promenade, connected by a convenient cycle path, offers soft sandy beaches north of the port (otherwise quite rare for this portion of the coast) clean and well equipped, and not too deep waters near the shoreline, ideal for the whole family. To the south, wide stony beaches are served by bathing establishments (including a beach equipped for dogs) and a portion of free beach in the center of the south promenade is a favorite place for kite surfers looking for wind and waves.

Geographical notes

The territory has the conformation of a coastal hill, with an altitude level between 3 and 223 m a.s.l. in Contrada San Savino.

The typical conformationcomb of the Marche hills is recognizable by the opposition of the Chienti Valley with the hilly group where Civitanova Alta rests, which slopes gently towards the sea on the suggestive Palazzaccio road, with an altitude of 100 m a.s.l. and a few hundred meters from the Adriatic Sea.

From the orographic point of view, the municipal territory develops starting from the Chienti Valley to the south and continues to the north alternating between hills and small valleys, swinging gradually until reaching Civitanova Alta and then continuing towards the area of Villa Conti, Palazzaccio , Mori and Alviano. Small hilly areas located at an altitude of 100-120 m s.l.m from which you can see the nearby Adriatic Sea.

When to go

The tourist season par excellence is the summer one, being a typically seaside destination, but the plurality of commercial activities mean that Civitanova receives a consistent number of arrivals and presences even in the low season, being still one of the most renowned cities in the Macerata both industrial and tourist level.

How to orient yourself

Neighborhoods

The peculiarity of Civitanova lies not so much in the plurality of its neighborhoods as in the clear division between Civitanova Porto (coastal area) and Civitanova Alta (hilly area). To the south, the municipal territory, indicatively for the Risorgimento, Centro and Santa Maria Apparente districts, the city rests on the alluvial plain of the Chienti river. Along the coastal area, the districts of Centro, Fontespina and San Gabriele rest partially on the deposits of the coastal plain while Civitanova Alta rests on a hill at 155 m. s.l.m.

Grocery stores are well distributed throughout the municipality, with obvious concentration in the further downstream districts. Shops tend to be open until 8pm with few exceptions.
