Background
The remains of about 57 nuraghi testify that the territory of Codrongianos was already heavily populated in the second millennium BC, during the Bronze Age.
The origins of today's town can be traced back to Roman times when in the third century the Castrum Gordianus was built to guard the road that led from Karalis to Turris Libisonis, a name that over the centuries will change first to Cotroianu and then to Codrongianos .
In medieval times there were two villages with the same name: Cotroianu and Cotroiano Jossu, further down. Both were part of the Giudicato of Torres, included in the curatoria of Fiolinas. From the 14th century Cotroianu Jossu depopulated until it disappeared, and today's Codrongianos originated from Cotroianu, which in 1420, after the Aragonese conquest, was united to the barony of Ploaghe and given as a fief to the Aymerichs. Judge Constantine III of Torres, together with his wife Marcusa, in 1116 had the basilica of Saccargia built here near the village of the same name. The monks were expelled by the Aragonese in the 15th century and the abbey's assets were divided and given to the clergy, while the title of prior was taken over by the bishop of Sassari. The town was redeemed to the Aymerichs in 1839, with the abolition of the feudal system.
