Community Baboon Sanctuary - Community Baboon Sanctuary

Howler monkey

Community Baboon Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary in Belize in the Belize District.

background

In Creole dialect, baboon means howler monkey. Here, on a private initiative, a howler monkey reserve of around 25 square kilometers for 2000 howler monkeys is maintained

history

The reserve was established in 1985 by Dr Robert Horwich and initially 12 landowners with the support of the Worldwide Fund for Nature in the village of Bermudian Landing. There are now 250 landowners spread across eight villages involved in this project. Museum, education and ecotourism have resulted in the creation of a secure source of income for many of the residents living here, in addition to securing the howler monkey population.

landscape

This reserve stretches across rainforest and farmland along the Belize River.

activities

  • Wildlife observation - Nowhere else in Belize is the chance of encountering a pack of howler monkeys as great as here. The little howler monkeys in particular sometimes come very close, but here, too, just look. This is quite possible in a half-day hike. But there are not only howler monkeys here. Of course, the rainforest also has more to offer here. Night hikes are also offered here.
  • canoeing - In some villages you can rent canoes to cross the reserve. More information is available in Bermudian Landing
  • horse riding - Here, too, there are numerous options for renting horses. More information is available in Bermudian Landing
