Cortina, which was predominantly Ladin-speaking until the Olympic Games in 1956, has been speaking increasingly Italian since then.

tourism

Cortina is now a fashionable holiday resort with a focus on winter sports.

The first beginnings of tourism are at the end of the 19th century when the small town was discovered as the destination of wealthy mountain enthusiasts. Cortina initially developed into a classy holiday resort that was popular all year round, the first luxury hotels were built and in 1903 the first ski school. The First World War was then a severe setback for tourism: the Dolomites around Cortina are also a theater of war, Cortina reaches Italy from Austria-Hungary after the end of the war.

The next big upswing can be dated to the period after the Second World War: the Alpine Ski World Championships took place as early as 1932 and 1941, which brought the greatest tourist boom for Cortina, but then the Winter Olympics in 1956. Since then, Cortina has primarily been regarded as one Meeting of the global crowd with corresponding prices: the place with Ladin culture, Austro-Hungarian past and located in Italy is ascribed its own cosmopolitan self-confidence with its international guests.
