East Coast of Suriname is a region of Suriname. comprising the districts of Commewijne, Marowijne, Paramaribo and Wanica. One can discover there some of the best examples of old colonial plantations, some of which are still in activity, others have been deserted and are largely in ruins. Along the northeast coast you will also find some of the most important sea turtle nesting beaches throughout the West Atlantic.

Cities

  • 1 Paramaribo  – The historic and bustling country capital is the largest and most developed city in the country and is featured in virtually every trip to Suriname. For good reason, the old center with the old Dutch fort of Zeelandia has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while the range of its small restaurants allows for a taste of Suriname's broad cuisine.
  • 2 Albina  – Albina is a small town on the banks of the Marowine River, which separates eastern Suriname from the French Guiana neighbor. It is the capital of the Marowijne district and with an estimated population of around 4,000, it is a large city for Suriname, but a small, laid-back locality for most visitors. There's nothing awe-inspiring to see here, but it's a major hub for anyone looking to visit Galibi's turtle beaches or travelers wanting to cross the border with Guyana.
  • 3 Domburg  – Domburg is at 25 km South of Paramaribo in the Wanica district. This village of about 6000 inhabitants is very pleasant and located on the Suriname River. It used to be a large coffee plantation. Nowadays, the entrance to the old plantation is a cozy square with beautiful mahogany trees. There is a pier, kiosk and benches. Around the square, there are small cafes and restaurants with terraces. It is a quiet place except on Sundays as the square is inundated with day trippers from Paramaribo to visit the market.
  • 4 Santigron  – Santigron is a brown village, made up of former slaves on the run, located nearby 30 km of Paramaribo, along the Saramacca River. Its location close to the capital has caused the village to lose many of its traditional features, but in recent years its approximately 500 permanent residents have chosen tourism as a new and sustainable source of income. As a result, its original Maroon features are gradually being restored and amplified, and facilities for tourists are improving rapidly. Many tour operators offer tours of the school, the church and normally one or two dances performed by the villagers.
  • 5 Lelydorp  – Lelydorp is located on the road to Paramaribo To Zanderij. Originally called Kofi-Djompo after a slave, the locality was renamed when famous Dutch engineer Lely created a railway line there and the locality became an important stopover, at the crossroads of the railway line and the main road of the airport. The railway is no longer in use, but with some 17,000 inhabitants, mostly Javanese and Hindu, Lelydorp is the second largest city in Suriname. It is the administrative center of the Wanica district and the seat of the district commissioner. The place is important as a place of supplies for people who leave the capital for the interior of the country. There are several shops and restaurants as well as a hotel. There are even a few attractions.
  • 6 Moengo  – Once a leading center for bauxite mining, Moengo (sometimes written Mungo) is still a town with nearly 10,000 inhabitants. It is located along the river and Cottica and connected to Paramaribo and Albina by the road.
  • 7 Nieuw Amsterdam  – This village is located in the far northwest of the Commewijne district. It is an administrative center with medical and educational institutions. The main tourist attraction is the fort.
