Deir el Garnus (Arabic:دير الجرنوس‎, Dair al-Ǧarnus or his old nameدير الجرنوس «ارجانوس»‎, Dair al-Ǧarnūs "Arǧānūs" or the ancient Baysus) is a village with about 6,500 inhabitants[1] and a monastery in Middle Egypt in the governorate Minyā west of the Nile about 8 kilometers northeast of el-Bahnasā away. The monastery church is an important place of pilgrimage to the Escape route of the Holy Family in Egypt.

On his way from 10 km to the east Ischnīn en-Naṣārā to el-Bahnasā the holy family stopped here. The ethiopian synaxarium (Martyrologium) reports of a well at this point, from which St. Family drank and who was used here like a nilometer.

The monastery has its origins in the 6th century AD. However, only the modern monastery church has survived today.

getting there
