Dole is a French city located in the Swear in Franche-Comte. The inhabitants of Dole are called the Dolois.

Understand

Capital of the old County, located on the banks of the Doubs and the Rhône-Rhine canal, at the foot of the Chaux forest (2nd forest in France). City of Art and History, Dole will offer you a heritage of 43 historical monuments, in a protected area of 114 hectares. It is the birthplace of Louis Pasteur.

History

It is on a limestone cornice which overhangs the Doubs that the city was established (Dole means "small height") (a reference is missing). In XIe century, the count of Burgundy decides to build a castle there in order to monitor the traffic on the river. The population will settle around this castle. In the XIIIe century, Dole is the capital of La Comté, and is experiencing a real golden age. In 1386 we will see a parliament, later a university. But the city (like all of the County) is very often the victim of looting and attempts at conquest (in particular on the part of France and Switzerland). It will be besieged by the King of France in 1479 without success, Charles-Quint fortified it in 1530. Finally, the Treaty of Nijmegen in 1698 attached the County to France, and made Besançon the capital of Franche-Comté. In the XIXe century, the town of Dole experienced late industrialization and new constructions were located on the outskirts of the old center. This one is hardly transformed. In 1967, the safeguarded sector was created. Its 114 hectares protect the entire old town and its surroundings.

Squares and fountains

In the Middle Ages, the city was supplied with power from the springs that flow from the bottom of the city and the wells dug in the main roads, the courtyards of private mansions and the cloisters of convents. In 1678, the County entered the Kingdom of France. Louis XIV then decides to make Besançon the new capital of the province, at the expense of Dole. The ramparts were also destroyed while in Besançon, Vauban built the citadel. This destruction of the ramparts is an opportunity for the city to expand and create vast spaces, gardens and squares. The Cours Saint Mauris, the Place Neuve (now Place Grévy), the Place d´Armes (now Place Précipiano) were created at this time. Several fountains are built in the upper part of the city. This is how we built the Ratez fountain (at the corner of rue du Collège de l'Arc and rue de laonnaie), the Attiret fountain (rue des Arènes), the fountain of the Dauphin (rue de la Sous-Préfecture), the Lion fountain (currently cours Saint-Mauris) ... At the end of the 18th centurye century, a monumental fountain adorned with a full-length statue of Louis XVI was built in the town's main square (on what is now the Place Nationale), against the north side of the church. It was renamed the Fountain of Peace a little later. In the XIXe century, we are trying to ventilate the city and improve traffic. This is how the disappearance of a residential block allowed the creation of the current Place aux Fleurs, embellished with the Children's Fountain, the work of sculptor Rosset.
