The castle in Drzewica was already a kind of anachronism in the time when it was built, it was gothic, and then the Renaissance was already common in Poland. It was built in the years 1527-1535 by the Archbishop of Gniezno, Maciej Drzewicki. The building was supposed to overshadow the nearby royal castles in Backyard and Inowłódz.
Throughout the years, the residence was not rebuilt and has retained its form from the 16th century. The castle, erected from the foundations, was in the form of a gothic castle, defended by four corner towers. towers at the corners. An interesting fact is that the towers were built at an angle to the wings of the castle. In one of them, north-east, there is an entrance gate, still well-preserved to this day, with a wide entrance for vehicles and horses and a narrow pedestrian crossing.
Drzewica was in the hands of the founder's family until the beginning of the 18th century, then it became the property of the Sołtyk and Szaniawski family. The latter donated the disused castle to the Bernardine monastery around the middle of the 18th century.
The nuns lived in the castle until 1814, when it was consumed by a great fire, in which all wooden elements and beautiful interiors burnt down. Only bare walls remained. Since then, for 200 years, the castle has been in a state of ruin.

The outlines of the foundations are legible and the bare, unadorned walls are visible.
The castle in Drzewica, although in ruins, is still impressive. Especially on the scale of the province, which does not abound in strongholds. The facility has been owned by a private owner for years, who had a concept of reconstruction and adaptation of the building for hotel purposes, not yet implemented. Only all entrance openings to the courtyard were secured, making it difficult for vandals to act.
