Elzach is a small town in the Black Forest. It belongs to the Breisgau and is located in Elz Valley.

Elzach was first mentioned in a document in 1178. In 1290 the place received city rights. Elzach had the bad luck to burn down several times, namely in 1490, 1583, 1631 and 1634. In 1805 the city became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden. As part of an administrative reform in 1974/75, the formerly independent villages Katzenmoos, Prechtal, Oberprechtal and Yach were incorporated.
Neighboring communities in the Emmendingen district are Biederbach, Gutach im Breisgau, Winches and Simonswald. Other neighboring towns are Mühlenbach, Gutach (Black Forest Railway) and Hornberg in the Ortenaukreis as well Schonach in the Schwarzwald-Baar district.

The 1 Elzach railway station is the end point of the route from Denzlingen and Waldkirch. The Breisgau-S-Bahn is to be used every hour from June 2021, every half hour during rush hour, with no transfers until Freiburg drive. Until then, there will be rail replacement services due to construction work.
