Geographical notes

OnAbruzzo Apennines, the town is 7 km from Villa Santa Maria, 17 from Bomb, 30 from Atessa, 32 from Castel di Sangro, 44 from They launch, 70 from Chieti.

Background

The origins are unknown, but some want the town already existing in the year 1000. The first documentary information is given by the thirteenth-century reports of the visits of the bishop of Chieti, in which it is indicated as Faldus.

In 1304 King Charles II of Anjou received the fiefs of Pietraferrazzana as a gift from the Caldora family, Villa Santa Maria, Fallo and Civitaluparella. On 17 May 1391 King Ladislao gave a They launch, along with various tax exemptions, the castle of Fallo along with other nearby castles. In 1467 the fiefs of the Caldora, including Fallo, were put up for sale. In 1583 the fief of Fallo, together with Civitaluparella passed to Giulio Cesare Rossillo who, in 1590 sold it to Giuseppe Mellucci for 18,000 ducats.

From a document by Giuseppe Bonaparte dated January 19, 1807, Fallo is mentioned as a dependency of Villa Santa Maria; later with the unification of Italy it was part of the district of They launch and of the province of Abruzzo Citiori. This situation remained until 1927-1928 when the municipality was suppressed and aggregated to the municipality of Civitaluparella until 1962, the year in which Fallo returned to being an autonomous municipality.

What see

  • Parish church of San Giovanni Battista. The destruction of the original church makes it difficult to establish its origin, even if there is evidence of a date, 1715, engraved on a stone that has now disappeared that existed near the portal.
In 1933 the church was restored after an earthquake, moving it about thirty meters from its original location. The bell tower was also adapted during the restoration.
Inside there are numerous frescoes, also on the ceiling, some of which by the Roman painter Cesare Napoleoni commissioned by Don Giulio Zuffardi (made between 1938-1939). The painting at the main altar represents the Madonna of Divine Love between St. John the Baptist and St. Nicholas. The church has a single nave with six altars.
  • Church of the Madonna del Soccorso, piazza Santa Maria. It is dominated by a square-based bell tower which also serves as a clock tower. : The interior has an altar, balustrade and marble floor. Near the entrance an inscription bears the year 1871. After the roof has been rebuilt, the façade has been restored with exposed stones; a cornice surrounds the outside of the church all around. The main portal is architraved.
  • De Lollis Palace, Corso Umberto I. Three-storey building from 1934. It has string course cornices and the entrance portals have an ashlar relief. The side portals are surmounted by a round arch, while the central one is lowered. The main floor and the upper floor have a particular alternation of balconies and windows, on the first floor two balustraded balconies with architraved access doors and in the center a mullioned window with a central column and two round arches [9]; on the second floor two side windows and a central balcony. The crowning is marked by a double frame in which the upper frame rests on shelves. : The openings with architrave are decorated with garland and floral reliefs that refer to the liberty style and art decò. The plastering is painted in a dull yellow tone, while the architectural reliefs in both stone and stucco are painted gray.
  • Borgo Valle Vecchia and Borgo Pietra Antica. They are two groups of mostly abandoned rural houses, dating back to the nineteenth century and remodeled according to various needs. Abandoned buildings are dilapidated. In some cases the houses have been built on pre-existing 12th century dwellings. In many cases the fixtures are missing. :The Borgo Valle Vecchia it is located on a widening of the homonymous street, like Borgo Pietra Antica. The cellars and stables correspond to the ground floor of the houses. The upper floors were served by external stairs on barrel vaults or flying buttresses. The buildings are made of stone and worked pebbles.
  • Fonte Murata. It is a source entirely built in squared stone located in the homonymous locality of Fallo. The construction dates back to the 17th century. The central part consists of a basin served by three spouts. On the side there are two drinking troughs connected to the main tank by volutes.
