Geographical notes

Fertilia is located in the historical region of Nurra. It is 6 km from the center of Alghero and about 34 km from Sassari.

Background

The transformation of the swampy territory of the Nurra already began towards the end of the nineteenth century with the reclamation of the coastal lagoon of Calich thanks to the work of inmates from the nearby Alghero prison and the penal colony of Cuguttu. The work continued in 1927 with the construction of the Calik Village on a project by Pier Luigi Carloni.

The village of Fertilia was officially born on 8 March 1936 with the laying of the first stone of the parish church, by the Ferrarese Colonization Authority, established on 7 October 1933 by the fascist regime to give an answer to the excess population of the Province of Ferrara and decrease social tensions.

After the first arrivals of emigrants from Ferrara, the outbreak of the Second World War effectively paralyzed the colonization work, so that most of the buildings remained virtually unused. After the war it would have been the exiles of Istria and Dalmatia who populated the village, making it become a microcosm similar to the Catalan-speaking one of Alghero.

Inheriting the Venetian tradition of the new arrivals, the village was dedicated to San Marco and there is a winged lion, his symbol, right in the center of the belvedere. The peculiarity of the village is that all the streets and squares recall historical places or events of Veneto and Venezia Giulia.

What see

- the church of San Marco
The Roman bridge
  • 1 Church of San Marco. The parish church of San Marco is the main church of Fertilia. Initially dedicated to the Sacred Heart, with the arrival of the Venetian colonists it was also associated with St. Mark the Evangelist. Construction began on 8 March 1936. It is characterized by an interrupted gabled façade with a deep round arched room that encloses the entrance through the large window. In 1957 the bell tower (22 meters) was added, which bears evident references to similar Venetian structures: the upper part in fact recalls the bell tower of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice.
Inside the most important work is the mosaic on the high altar of the Risen Jesus with angels. Commissioned in 1939 and created by the Sardinian painter Giuseppe Biasi, one of the most important on the island. The four evangelists present in the arch of the presbytery are the early work of Sergio Zidda. Almost the rest of the building was decorated by the famous sculptor-ceramist from Sassari Giuseppe Silecchia. The baptistery was instead painted in 1950 by Dante Pantaleoni.
  • 2 Roman bridge (It is located on the Calich pond, near Fertilia). Ancient bridge of Roman origin rebuilt in medieval times. From the excavations and studies carried out in situ, the foundations of the first seven arches date back to the Roman period.
