Background

Prehistory

The territory has been inhabited by man since the pre-Nuragic and Nuragic periods.

From the Middle Ages to today

The name of the town is attributable to the intersection of the terms Ulimu (elm) and Ulmetum (olmeto, forest of elms), respectively derived from Nuragic [no source] and Latin, by virtue of the conspicuous presence, before urban development, of elms, some examples of which can still be admired today. Ulumetu, a small village, but chief town of curatoria, part of the Giudicato of Torres. Thus the Condaghe di Silki, a religious register of the thirteenth century, brings us back the ancient vestiges of Olmedo, testifying, since ancient times, the existence and the role it assumed as an important administrative center in the institutional structure of the time. In this period, the few bibliographic sources outline a country characterized by infighting for its possession. During the fourteenth century the village was, in fact, involved and disputed in the bloody war that the Dorias, united by a strong parental bond to the Torres family, fought, starting from 1325, first with the Crown of Aragon and, subsequently, with the Giudicato di Arborea, who conquered it permanently in 1336. Subsequently dominated by the Aragonese, it soon became a fiefdom, passing from hand to hand to various local lords. The reconstruction was almost immediate thanks to the then lord of the villa, Giacomo Mercer. [Citation needed]

1540 marked a historical turning point for the town, which was sacked and devastated by the Saracens, whose numerous raids infested much of the Nurra at the time. Perhaps due to this feral circumstance most of the testimonies of that period were irretrievably lost. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, in 1603, Olmedo - by now insecure and subject to frequent attacks by pirates - depopulated and had just nine "fires", or about forty inhabitants. With the Amat, who held power for about a century, a slow but inexorable demographic increase begins. Being part of the Province of Alghero from 1821 to 1848, the town of Olmedo, after the abolition of the provinces, became part of the administrative division of Sassari to become an integral part of it in 1859.

In recent years the town has been experiencing intense building development, mainly due to the relocation of a certain number of families from the urban centers of Sassari and Alghero, in search of affordable rents and residences.
