Flanders located in Belgium. This Dutch-speaking part of the country is known for its green plains with some very old and old-looking cities, especially Bruges and Ghent. The Belgian capital Brussels is also the seat of the Flemish institutions, but the actual capital is rather Antwerp. The short stretch of the North Sea coast that Belgium has also belongs to Flanders Ostend and Zeebrugge.
Regions
- Belgian part of the continental North Sea coast
- Flemish part of the Central European lowlands

Other goals
- Brussels is completely enclosed by the Flanders region.
- Waterloo with panoramic picture of the historical battle
- Baarle - the Belgian-Dutch border puzzle
- in the east of Flanders lies the Dutch province of Limburg with its capital Maastricht
background
The region is quite small with 13,522 km², but densely populated with over 6 million inhabitants. The not so large state of Hesse, for example, has 21,115 km² and a few fewer inhabitants.
language
The official and colloquial language in Flanders is Dutch. English, French and sometimes German are foreign languages that are taught at school. Most Flemish people understand English because English-language films usually use subtitles. Since children cannot read, they learn English.
Flemings are reluctant to speak French. It is better for non-French people to avoid this language.
getting there
By train from Eupen via Brussels directly to Ostend. This train travels almost completely through Flanders and runs every hour. There are several train connections from Brussels to various parts of Flanders. From Germany, Flanders can be reached via the E40 motorway.
The biggest airports near Flanders belong to Brussels. There are also smaller airports such as Antwerp or Bruges-Ostend.
mobility

The best mode of transport is the good old bicycle, regardless of whether you are looking for a destination in the bigger cities or just to see the area. The wayfinding takes place via numbered intersections, which makes orientation easier if you know the intersections. A route is described by a combination of numbers. Due to the lack of directions, it makes sense to have a map with you.On these cards you can see junctions and suggestions for round trips. Simply enter the desired location at "jump to".
In addition to the many nodes, there are also themed routes that are easier for tourists to discover. The 820 km long circuit Vlaanderen Fietsroute runs through five Flemish provinces.[1]
Local public transport
There is public transport in all cities, operated by De Lijn. Ghent, Antwerp and the cities on the coast have buses and trams as well.

Flemish cuisine is down-to-earth and fine at the same time: e.g. tomatoes filled with North Sea shrimp, game fish stew, mussel croquettes, Ghent-style stew ("Gentse waterzooi") and much more. For a quick snack, we recommend ordering a "kleintje met stoofvleessaus", everyone who likes fries will be delighted. The meat cooked at low temperatures, which is now very fashionable in Germany and which crumbles on the tongue, has been around for a long time. The following restaurant is recommended for absolute gourmets:
- 1 Hof van Cleve, Riemegemstraat 1, 9770 Kruishoutem. Tel.: (0)9 383 58 48. Located in an old country house on the hills of Kruishouten. The Cleve family lived in this house until 1968. Since 1992 there is a very good kitchen with many awards and the prices are correspondingly high.
nightlife
The nightlife in Flanders mainly takes place on the coast and in the larger cities. However, there are also so-called village discos, where the village then celebrates.
security
The crime rate is low in Flanders, but you should still be careful of your valuables and lock your car.
climate
Flanders has a maritime climate due to its proximity to the sea. Directly at the sea, the cloud cover can be opened by the wind, so that the sun shines a little more often there.
