The Forgotten World Highway leads from Stratford to Taumarunui.

The Forgotten World Highway is the former State Highway 43. It is 155 km long and is still called SH 43 signposted.

  • There is no gas station on the entire route, and the highway is not completely paved (around 10 km away). As of Nov. 2009

getting there

If you start in Stratford, you will arrive via SH 3, either from the south Hawera or from the north over New Plymouth

For the pure driving time you have to estimate around 3 hours.

Stratford - Whangamomona (70 km)

  • Stratford: worth seeing the Taranaki Pioneer Village.
  • Douglas - rural town with a large dairy, historic brick factory
  • Strathmore Saddle, a mountain saddle with a good view of the Taranaki in the west and the mountains Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngaurahoe in the East.

On the branch line Brewer Road lie

  • Makahu tunnel, Road tunnel from 1907
  • Bridge to Somewhere, Concrete bridge from 1937, identical to the Bridge to Nowhere at the Whanganui River

Whangamomona - Taumarunui (85 km)

  • Whangamomona
  • Tahora Saddle
  • Moki tunnel, 180 m long single-lane road tunnel, as Hobbits Hole in the movie Lord of the rings
  • Mt Damper Falls, Waterfalls can only be reached on a walking path
  • Tangarakau Gorge, Gorge with stone forests (Podocarp)
  • Tatu Coal Mine Village, small place, the entrance to an old coal mine is within walking distance.
  • Ohura on a branch line (10 km)
  • Nevin's lookout, Viewpoint a little off the road
  • Aukopae, by the place is the old tunnel through which the street once went.
  • Riverboat Landing, once the landing stage of the old steam boats at Whanganui River
  • Te Maire Reserve, next to the road protected area with stone slabs (Podocarp forest)
  • Herlihy's Bluff
  • Taumarunui

From Taumarunui there are several variants, one after Hamilton in the north, or after Wanganui in the south or after Taupo in the East.
