background

history

According to a manual written by Francis Asbury Hendry, who lived from 1833-1917, Fort Myers first appeared around 1841 when it was first occupied as Fort Harvey. The military fort was then abandoned in 1842, rebuilt in 1850 and used in honor of a U.S. officer. Army named Abraham C. Myers, a colonel. The fort was a center for command and control operations during the war against the American Indian tribes who lived in Florida until they were defeated and relocated from the state to regions in the western United States. However, part of the Seminole Indian tribe never surrendered and stayed in the Florida wilderness. Colonel Myers reportedly resigned and joined the Confederate Army when the Civil War began. Under Confederate control, African slaves were transported from Virginia to the area to aid in growing crops.

During the civil war, the fort changed hands once or twice between the armed forces of the north and the south. An African-American infantry of Union soldiers was stationed at Fort Myers from 1863 to 1864. Under the authority of Monroe County, the first African American school was established in the Fort Myers area on the grounds of an emancipated slave named Nelson Tillis in 1885. Although Thomas Edison ran telegraph services for the north side of the Civil War, Edison bought a winter home in Fort Myers in 1886 after marrying his second wife earlier that year (National Park Service, 2012). In 1890, the first African-American teacher (Annie Moore) was hired to teach in the area (Lee County Black History Society, 2011).

A county called Lee County, so named in honor of Commanding General of the South, Robert E. Lee, was established in 1887. By 1908 the population of Fort Myers was about five to six thousand (Captain F.A. Hendry Reunion Committee, 2002). In 1912, the first black-only public school in Lee County was established (Williams Academy). Henry Ford bought the house and land next to Thomas Edison in 1916. In 1920 Jones Walker Hospital was only opened to the black population. Bunche Beach was opened in 1949 as the first local beach only for the black population. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled to end segregation in public schools. However, this decision was not implemented until 1969 through the integration of Lee County's local schools. Relocated to Clemente Park in the Dunbar section of Fort Myers in 1995, Williams Academy is the premier center for African American history in Lee County. The museum and administrative offices were established on Henderson Avenue in 1936 (Lee County Black History Society, 2011).
