Fukuoka is, with a population of more than 5 million inhabitants, the most populous prefecture of the island of Kyushu, at Japan.

Understand

Fukuoka has a very ancient history and has been in close contact with the Asian neighbors of Japan, was the site of two Mongol invasions at the end of the XIIIe century having failed (because of typhoons, hence the term Suicide bomber). Its port has been widely used in the ancient history of Japan and was the entry point for the spread of Buddhism.

Cities

  • 1 Fukuoka (福岡)  – The capital, part of which is also known as Hakata. It is the largest city of Kyūshū by its population (over 1.4 million). There's a lot to see here, and if you're just stopping in Fukuoka Prefecture, this eponymous city is a great place to stay and visit.
  • 2 Kitakyushu (北九州)  – It is the largest city of Kyūshū by area (486 km²) and 2e in population. It is best known for its industry, but there is much more to see and enjoy.
  • 3 Dazaifu (大 宰 府)  – Part of the Fukuoka metropolitan area, it is the former administrative capital of Kyushu and is home to the popular and atmospheric Dazaifu Tenman-gu shrine.
  • 4 Kurume (久留 米)  – The third largest city in the prefecture, famous for its annual flower festival featuring more than 350,000 azaleas, its bamboo lacquer, the kurume-gasuri (traditional indigo cotton fabric), and a big fireworks festival every summer.
  • 5 Chikushino (筑紫 野 市)  – A suburb of Fukuoka famous for its hot springs in Futsukaichi and for golf with several country clubs.
  • 6 Fukutsu (福 津)
  • 7 Yanagawa (柳川)  – A pretty little town with many ancient shrines and mansions that can be visited via its canals.
  • 8 Yame (八 女)  – A quiet and more traditional town, famous for its green tea and for its traditional handicrafts like Buddhist altars, lanterns and Japanese paper.

Trains and buses connect almost all towns and villages, with the exception of a few isolated mountain areas. Taxis are plentiful but can be expensive, even by Japanese standards. Fukuoka City also has its own metro, and Kitakyūshū has its own railway and monorail network. Like many other Japanese cities, JR has the largest network, but another private railway company, Nishitetsu, also operates a heavily used railway line between Tenjin Station in Fukuoka City and Omuta, with omnibus, express and limited express trains (1 020 JPY for h about).

Eat

The local specialty is tonkotsu ramen, pork bone broth ramen. It is easily found in a number of street stalls called yatai on the streets of the cities of Fukuoka and Kurume, as well as in Ramen Stadium in the Canal City entertainment complex. Spicy cod roe called mentaiko are also famous, although nowadays they are imported.
