Gang Mills is part of the Town of Erwin, a suburb of Corning in Steuben County in the state new York. That is in the hills above the village Erwin Park Innovation Center, a research and production facility of Corning, Inc.

Gang Mills owns one of the major shopping districts in the Corning / Painted Post Area.

background

Gang Mills has little to offer in terms of tourism, but is interesting due to its socio-cultural situation. The place has an unusually high proportion of academics (81%) and a high proportion of South Asians (Indians, Pakistani, Bangladeshi; 13%). The background to this is that Corning, Inc. has a constant need for highly qualified employees and therefore makes immigration easier for suitable applicants. Although South Asians live everywhere in Gang Mills and also in Corning, the Emerald Springs Apartments is below the Erwin Park Innovation Center a real small Indian housing estate emerged. The Sunuco petrol station on South Hamilton Street has developed into a South Asian grocery store, in which many imported goods are offered cheaply - from the outside at all.

The Gang Mills business district (around S Hamilton St) is consistently paved with sidewalks, but it stretches for almost 2 km and is therefore not for people with foot problems.

Tourist Attractions

Gang Mills is primarily a residential, industrial and business district and hardly offers any sights. The only exception is a magnificent house built in neoclassical style on the edge of the Cohocton River (Canada Road, near Wal-Mart), which is privately owned and cannot be visited.

activities

The dykes of the Cohocton River and the Tioga River offer unpaved walking paths.

shop

  • Aldi, 9951 Silverback Lane, Wal-Mart Plaza. A branch of the German discounter chain opened in 2011. German chocolate and many other longing items that are often difficult to find in the USA.
  • Home Depot, Wal-Mart Plaza. Large hardware store (chain). If you can't find what you're looking for here, you have to go Big flats drive to Lowe's.
  • Peaches and Cream. (please refer further down). Fresh fruits and vegetables from local growers. Only in summer.
  • Wal-Mart, 9951 Chatfield Place (Wal-Mart Plaza, west of Robert Dann Drive). Large department store with a complete grocery department. Photo service. Since the employees receive dumping wages and the corporate concept leads to the displacement of local small businesses (which ensure product diversity), Wal-Mart is boycotted by many Americans. The supermarket Wegmans in Corning is slightly more expensive, but offers a wider selection of quality foods that suit European tastes.
  • 1  Hamilton Mini Mart (Sunuco Gas Station), 305 S Hamilton St. The most interesting shopping address in Gang Mills is a small Indian supermarket run by the tenant of the local Sunuco gas station. The operation also includes a small Indian restaurant (take-out only).

kitchen

Eating out at Gang Mills is only worth it if you're there anyway. The selection of interesting restaurants is larger, e.g. in Corning and in Big flats.

  • Arby's, 3170 S Hamilton St. Branch of a large fast-food chain. Sandwiches.
  • Driscoll's Souper Bowl, 295 S Hamilton St. Simple restaurant with American cuisine. The specialty are the soups.
  • The Hot Dog Shoppe, 295 S Hamilton St. Tiny fast food restaurant with a small selection of inexpensive hot dogs.
  • Subway, at Wal-Mart. Fast food restaurant (chain) in which the sandwiches are made individually according to customer requirements. Not for people who are afraid to speak English.
  • Taco Bell, 3135 Silverback Lane (across from Aldi and Applebee's). The worst fast-food restaurant in the district (opened in 2014 under a management that is not up to the high demands of the franchisor for fast and precise service). Very quickly furnished, friendly staff and the food is okay, but if you really want to eat at Taco Bell and really want to get what you have ordered reliably, you better go to the branch Big flats.

medium

  • Applebee's, Wal-Mart Plaza. Branch of a large restaurant chain. Attractively prepared eclectic American cuisine: steaks, burgers, salads, soups, pasta. Weight Watchers Courts. Try the wonton tacos and the sizzling skillet fajitas. Child friendly. Furnishing in the style of a Sports bar with many TV monitors showing current sporting events.
