kitchen

Cafes and ice cream parlors

Starbuck cafes can be found in the Barnes & Noble bookstore and in the entrance area of the Target department store. In the Arnot Mall there is the small standing café Taza. The most beautiful cakes are available in the Admira Bakery (see below), but you won't get coffee there that is good by European standards. So it's best to buy a cake from Admira first (don't forget plastic forks) and then go to Starbuck's; the women at the counter there don't care if someone consumes food that they have brought with them for their coffee.

Upscale

You can't really eat elitist in Big Flats, where there are practically only chains. Among the local restaurants, the Olive Garden is the only one that could be called "upscale". If you really want to invest in food, you'd better take a look Corning, to Horseheads or after Elmira.

  • Olive Garden, 3288 Chambers Road; on the western edge of the Arnot Mall. Tel.: 1 607-7965228.
    - The most sophisticated and well-maintained of all American chain restaurants. Quiet and intimate, the napkins are made of fabric and the chairs slide on castors. Italian cuisine as Americans expect and like it. Very extensive wine list.

nightlife

No nightlife in Big Flats, the district around the mall is practically extinct at night. If you want to have a beer after 10.30 p.m., you should go to Corning or Horseheads drive.

Only in 2013 was this neat hotel of the Marriott chain, located between lots of department stores but in a rather profane location, opened. Although there are a couple of decent restaurants within walking distance, not an address for those expecting nightlife (even the walk to the Regal Multiplex Cinema in Arnot Mall takes a good half an hour); when the last retailer closes in the evening, the sidewalks fold up. The biggest pluses are probably the good condition of the hotel and the value for money. 64 rooms and 16 suites on 3 floors.Price: Queen Room with Two Queen Beds, Microwave, and Mini-Fridge from $ 116.

health

For minor problems that do not require in-patient training or complex diagnostic equipment, you can find quick and friendly help at

Five Star Urgent Care, 830 County Road 64, Consumer Square. the local branch of a New York chain that specializes in small medical emergencies and offers much more generous opening hours than the general practitioners. Registration not necessary. Chains like Five Star Urgent Care fill the niche between the emergency room (with expensive medical equipment and almost always waiting times of hours) and resident doctors who can only be reached during their office hours. Although European visitors are always amazed at this concept, it is by no means McMedics. You will be treated by real doctors who will even take care of a broken bone if necessary, and you can later settle their services with a European travel health insurance; You have to have a credit card ready, like everywhere in American medical practices, but also at Five Star Urgent Care.

If, on the other hand, things are really serious, you either call 911 or drive the patient yourself to the brand new regional hospital that opened in 2014

Guthrie Corning Hospital, 1 Guthrie Drive, Corning. which is halfway between Corning and Big Flats. From Interstate 86 via Exit 48 (East Corning) then follow signs. The hospital can already be seen from the motorway.
