Watkins Glen is a small town in the Finger Lakes-Region of the US state new York. On the edge of Watkins Glen is the one that is extremely worth seeing Watkins Glen State Park. Watkins Glen is also famous for its car and motorcycle racetrack "The Glen" (actually: Watkins Glen International).

background

Watkins Glen was founded in 1842 as "Jefferson". The city got its current name in 1852 after the founder of the community, Dr. Samuel Watkins. Watkins Glen marked the northern end of the Chemung Canal, completed in 1833, which connected Seneca Lake with the Chemung River.

State park

  • Watkins Glen State Park, at Junction 14 & 414. One of the most photogenic state parks in the state, where a long, narrow and steep canyon can be hiked through, through which a wild watercourse partly flows, partly falls. Not for people with foot problems: 158 meters of difference in altitude have to be overcome. A visit is also pointless for parents who have to push a stroller.

  • First Baptist Church of Watkins Glen, Corner of 5th St and Porter St. Church built in late Victorian style.
  • Schuyler County Courthouse Complex, Corner of Franklin St and 9th St. Court and prison building from the third quarter of the 19th century.
