Background
Historically, the territory of Bristol was also part of Gloucestershire and is now an autonomous unitary district. The South Gloucestershire area was part of the county of Avon from 1974 to 1996 when with the abolition of the county of Avon the territory of South Gloucestershire became a unitary authority and was again assigned to the county of Gloucestershire.
