Soon after the discovery of gold in Mato Grosso is at Minas Gerais, a belief emerged in the 17th century that there would also be gold in the central region of the country, which was still uninhabited. There, very close to the Serra Dourada, Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva (the Anhanguera), found gold in the Vermelho River and founded the Arraial de Sant'anna, in 1727. The region was already inhabited by the Goyá Indians, who knew the locations of the deposits of gold. The Indians refused to tell the pioneers where the deposits were, so Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva puts brandy in a basin and sets it on fire. The astonished Indians shouted "Anhanguera", which means "Old Devil", and revealed to the pioneers where the deposits were located.

A decade later, in 1737, the Arraial was elevated to the category of administrative village, being renamed Vila Boa de Goyaz. In 1748, with the creation of the Carta Régia, the Captaincy of Goyaz is created and Vila Boa becomes the capital of the Captaincy. The first governor, Dom Marcos de Noronha, also known as Conde dos Arcos, built many important buildings in the city, such as the Casa de Fundição and the Palácio Conde dos Arcos, the new seat of government.

In the beginning of the 19th century, the gold was exhausted and the city turned its economic activities to agriculture and the city began to be culturally valued for remembering the city of São Paulo 450 years ago. The Fogaréu Procession is an important demonstration of Goiás culture, on this occasion, which takes place on Holy Week Wednesday, the arrest of Christ is represented. It was also at this time that he began to consider the construction of the country's first planned capital, Goiania, since the old city of Goiás had enormous planning problems and had nowhere to grow.

The construction of Goiania, started in 1933 by Governor Pedro Ludovico Teixeira, meant a setback in terms of population of the city, as many of the residents moved to the new capital, but the effect was positive for the conservation of the historic center. The nomination of the City of Goiás as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, in 2001, contributed even more to the city's tourism, which receives thousands of tourists every year, many from other countries.

Safety

The City of Goiás is a very safe city. However, you should use common sense and be careful when leaving benches, when parking your car, when walking in the streets. Don't show too much. Security is provided by the Municipal Guard and the Military Police of the State of Goiás.

respect

When talking to residents, especially the older ones, avoid using the expression "Goiás Velho" and comparisons with Goiânia. “Goiás Velho” is a term declared to be rejected by the villagers, conveys an appreciation of contempt for the city's historical role, placed in counterpoint to the modern Goiania. The error of gender agreement aggravates the gaffe, due to the metonymy that takes the city of Goiás for the State. State history does not hide the fact that the transfer of the capital generated quite significant economic, political and social impacts here; many houses and public buildings were abandoned, deteriorating. Meanwhile, those who remained in the city were struggling not to let their traditions succumb amid the myth of modernity, whose maximum expression was Goiânia. Upon returning to Goiás in 1956, after more than forty years away from the city, Cora Coralina wrote “O Cantico da Volta”, in which she narrates the moment:

Haughtily he felt the tremendous impact of the change. It did not depopulate or disintegrate with the great expolitation. In its current progress, there is a new sense of adjustment, solidarity and union of those who remained, imposing itself with dignity on the respect and admiration of those who left. There survives here, still and always, the same historical determinism that made live and flourish, within this wall of mountains and surrounded by these living waters, an authentic civilization that, in the darkening of two centuries, was considered a day ripe and ready to be changed, without crumbling, still leaving, for the later ones, strong roots and fertile seeds.

That's Vila Boa. Keep a positive vibe.
