Background

It was built in 1395, perhaps on the remains of a pre-existing structure, by Giovanni Anguissola to reside there with his wife Beatrice Visconti, sister of the Duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti. In 1521 Grazzano was razed to the ground and set on fire by the French following the failed attempt by Count Giacomo Anguissola to move towards the city of Piacenza starting from the castle at the head of a militia composed mainly of peasants and bandits. It remained the property of the Anguissola family until Count Filippo's death without heirs in 1870, after which it passed to his wife Francesca Visconti from whom it came, in 1883, to his nephew Guido Visconti di Modrone. At the beginning of the twentieth century Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone, son of Guido, conceived a large redevelopment project of the area aimed at recovering the stable conditions of the building, the redefinition of several of its characteristics and the construction of a fortified village, in replacement of rural buildings that had arisen over time.

The medieval fortress has a quadrangular plan with towers placed on the four corners, two of which are cylindrical and two are square. Built in stone and brick, the alternation of the two materials is exploited in a decorative key with the alternation of bands and the use of terracotta profiles on a stone background. The buildings constitute three sides of the complex, while the fourth is closed by a crenellated wall; inside there is a square-shaped courtyard with arcades. The castle is surrounded by a moat: the entrance was originally allowed via a drawbridge, replaced in 1689 and of which traces remain.

Itineraries

  • Castles of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza - Scattered over the Parma and Piacenza Apennines, but also present in the plain to guard the natural border of the Po, the numerous castles of the ancient Duchy of Parma and Piacenza characterize the whole area. Originally military bulwarks, many of them have kept the appearance of an inaccessible fortress, many have gradually transformed their war nature into a refined noble residence; all perpetuate over time the atmosphere of adventure, fairytale and legend that has always been linked to castles, many of which tell of the presence of spirits and ghosts.
  • Via Francigena.
