Portuguese is a Latin language spoken in Portugal as well as in the former Portuguese colonies: in particular the Brazil. The Portuguese language is the most widely spoken in the southern hemisphere, and South America, and the sixth most spoken in the world. It originates from the north of Portugal and the Spanish province of Galicia. It is a mixture of current Latin, with the language of the Gallaeci, but also with small later contributions from the Suevi (Germanic language), and around a thousand vocabulary words of Arabic origin (Alchemy, still, alcohol ...). From 1139, Portugal separated from Galicia, the Portuguese language was then influenced by the French introduced by the future royal family, as well as many French people who accompanied Henry of Burgundy, but especially by the Cistercian monks who founded monasteries and settle in the north of the country. the Galician is gradually influenced by the Castilian.

Grammar
Portuguese has genres, like French and Spanish, and the genre of a Portuguese word is usually the same as that of its French cognate: a week, uma semana. There are exceptions, including the suffix -agem, which is feminine: a journey, but uma viagem.
Portuguese is very attached to address and politeness in general. You are generally practiced using the word você to the 3e singular person or vocês in the plural. The term você is a Portuguese term from Brazil that is rarely used in Portugal. For example, "How are you?" said to himself Como vai? in Portugal but Como vai você? in Brazil.
