The Romanian is a Latin language spoken mainly in Romania and in Moldova, being official language in these two countries, but it is also spoken by Romanian minorities in Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Ukraine.

Romanian presents some grammatical difficulties for a French speaker, but knowledge of Italian has an advantage, since it looks more like Italian than other Latin languages. In addition, it includes a large amount of words of French origin, which makes it easier to learn.

Romanian distinguishes mainly between two degrees of politeness, also present in French: one is rendered by the familiar (the way of addressing by you), the other by the address (the way of addressing by dumneavoastră). Plural of you is see, dumneavoastră being used in the plural as well.

Pronunciation

Unlike French, the writing of Romanian is generally phonetic; that is, it renders the pronunciation exactly, with some exceptions.

The tonic stress can fall on any syllable in Romanian but, just like in French, not all words are accentuated. These are usually prepositions, conjunctions and certain adverbs.

The way to write the dates is the same as in French, for example 5 martie 2007, . Dates are preceded by the preposition pe, the or în : Poetul has matured for 15 years. ("The poet died on January 15.")
