Understand
The country became independent from Spain in 1968, under the dictator General Franco. Since then, it has been ruled by two men: Francisco Macías Nguema, the first president and a brutal dictator who despised intellectuals, murdered thousands of minority Bubi ethnic groups, banned fishing, and awarded himself a slew of grandiose titles such as the ridiculous Eternal President. He was replaced in 1979 by Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo and later captured and executed. Obiang's government though less violent is still brutally oppressive. Political force is centralized in his small clan and the eldest members of the government are his relatives. Despite having one of the largest GDPs in the world, the money is concentrated in the hands of a small elite, with the vast majority of the population living in poverty.
To arrive
Both Brazilians and Portuguese need a visa to enter the country.
By airplane
There are only two paved airports in the country: one a few kilometers from Malabo (SSG) and one in Bata (BSG). The country's main airline is Ecuator Guineana de Aviación, with domestic and international flights. Other companies that go to Malabo are Iberia (from Madrid), JetAir (from Gatwick, London), Air France (from Paris), Swiss (from Zurich) and Lufthansa (from Frankfurt). Starting in June/09, Delta will fly from Atlanta.
