Gyeonggi (경기도, 京畿 道, Gyeonggi-do) is the most populous province of the South Korea.

Gyeonggi is located in the central-western area of ​​the Korean peninsula. For about 86 km to the north, Gyeonggi borders the Korean demilitarized zone, to the west there are 413 km of coastline and the metropolitan city of Incheon, to the east the neighboring region is the province of Gangwon, while in the south you have the Northern Chungcheong and the Southern Chungcheong. In the center, on the other hand, is the city of Seoul.

Gyeonggi boasts a beautiful and luxuriant nature, rich in rivers, lakes, mountains and the sea. Its main rivers are the Han River, the Imjingang, and the Anseongcheon stream which flow into the Yellow Sea, crossing the plains of Gyeonggi, Yeonbaek and Anseong, making these areas very fertile and suitable for agriculture. Most of the mountains rise above 1,000 meters, and the main peaks are the Myeongjisan (1267m), Gukmangbong (1168m) and Yongmunsan (1157m) mountains. The Charyeong mountain range forms the boundary between Gyeonggi province and northern Chungcheong province, but is relatively low, with hilly elevations.

Background

Gyeonggi province has been politically important since 18 BC, when Korea was divided into three nations, during the three kingdoms period. Gyeonggi later became one of the nine states of unified Silla, and was called Hansanju.

Gyeonggi began to become the central region of the Koryŏ kingdom with King Taejo of Goryeo (the dynasty that succeeded the unified Silla), established in the capital of Kaesong. From 1018, this region was officially called "Gyeonggi".

The Taejo King of Joseon (post-Goryeo dynasty) moved the capital to Hanyang, and expanded the Gyeonggi area to include Gwangju, Suwon, Yeoju is Anseong, along with the southeastern region. During the time of King Taejong and Sejong the Great, Gyeonggi became almost identical to that of the current administrative area of ​​Gyeonggi province.

After the liberation from Japanese and the founding of the two Korean governments, the province of Gyeonggi and its capital, Seoul, were separated.
