Matra railroad

The development of the Mátra railway can actually begin with the circumstances from the years 1847 to 1912. Several efforts were made to have a state, public railway line built by the Hungarian Railways, which should run through the city of Gyöngyös. These and other projects add additional rail lines to the regions of the w: Mátra Mountains to put on failed.

In 1906, through the enterprise of a wood processing company and the diocese of Eger, a route in the Matra region with the Gauge of 600 mm to open. At the time, the wagons were still pulled by horses. By 1912, several routes were created in the area of the Matra and thus favored the transportation of wood and stone. The steam locomotive was put into operation around 1916, and the state forest railway connection between the municipalities of Gyöngyös and Mátrafüred, which still exists today, was only opened on June 5, 1923. the track widths of the lines were increased to 760 mm in 1925. May 12, 1932, when the line was officially designated the Matra Railway, was a special event. Due to the growing volume of goods transported, the steam locomotives were converted to diesel-powered trains in the 1960s. From an economic point of view, however, the transport of goods by rail was terminated in 1978/1980, it became cheaper to move the goods to modern road transport. Today only passenger transport is carried out, from Gyöngyös there are two routes which together have a total length of 18 km.
