The rock plateau Hadabat Umm es-Sid, English: Umm / Um el-Sid hill / cliff, Arabic:هضبة أم السيد‎, Haḍabat Umm as-Saiyid, „Rock plateau 'Mother of the Lord'", spoken: Haḍabat Umm es-Sīd, or short el-Hadaba, Arabic:الهضبة‎, al-Haḍaba, is located on the headland between the Na'ama Bay and Old Sharm. There are numerous hotels and holiday resorts here. The hill on which all the hotels are located extends to the shore. The only way to get to the sea is by stairs. The south-eastern end forms the cape Ras Umm Sid, Arabic:رأس أم سيد‎, Raʾs Umm Sīd, with the lighthouse.

background

Hadabat Umm es-Sid is located east of the Old town of Sharm esch-Sheikh on a headland. It starts around the end of the El Maya Bay and extends to the Tower Bay down. The district is, the name Hadaba suggests, on a rocky plateau. Below the plateau there are only a few beaches, mainly in the area of the hotels Amphoras Holiday Resort, Ritz Carlton, Sunrise Diamond, Hilton Sharm Waterfalls Resort, Reef Oasis Beach Resort and Club El Faraana Reef.

Hadabat Umm es-Sid as well as the old town have a number of good restaurants. The prices for hotel accommodation are lower than in the Naʿama Bay.

In particular in the southwest of the headland there is an extensive settlement with holiday homes, a mosque and a church. The hotels are distributed on the east and south coast, but most of them are located inside the headland.

The tourist facilities such as shops and restaurants are roughly in the middle of the headland. Further to the west there are important public institutions such as the post office and the police in a very small area. You are responsible for the entire holiday area of Sharm esch Sheikh.

Under water

There are six diving areas to the east and south of the headland: Amphoras, Turtle Bay, Paradise, Ras Umm Sid, Temple and Ra's Katy.

Amphoras

The dive site 5 Amphoras(27 ° 52 ′ 8 ″ N.34 ° 19 ′ 29 ″ E) got its name from the cargo of a Turkish ship that sank in the 17th century, which contained amphorae filled with mercury. The remains are located between the Monte Carlo Sharm El Sheikh, the former Ritz-Carlton Hotel, and the Amphoras Holiday Resort. Behind the reef roof, the reef drops to a sloping sandy slope in about eight to ten meters. On this sandy area there are coral sticks with soft corals, the green ones Turbinaria reniformis, Table corals (Acropora) and gorgonians. The wildlife includes butterfly fish, glass fish and anthias.

You usually start the dive at the Monte Carlo Sharm El Sheikh jetty. At a depth of around 25 meters you can still find parts of the anchor chain and the anchor of a modern ship. You continue to swim in a northerly direction. At about the level of the Amphoras Holiday Resort you can find the labeled anchor pole of the Turkish ship at a depth of about 23 meters. At a slightly greater depth, around 25 meters, further east there are also sparse remains of the cargo. The anchor and cargo are the only remains of this ship.

Turtle Bay

Immediately south of the Amphoras, at the height of the Royal Grand Sharm, is the rarely visited reef of the 6 Turtle Bay(27 ° 51 '48 "N.34 ° 19 ′ 16 ″ E). Behind the reef roof, the reef drops to a sandy slope at a depth of about twelve meters. There are various coral blocks with table corals, soft corals, Turbinaria, the massive yellow pore corals, Porites, and sea fans. Here you can find butterfly, emperor and soldier fish as well as anthers and tufted bass.

The current is low. The drift dive should be done in the current direction of the current north or south. You start at a depth of around 15 to 25 meters, where the corals are.

Paradise

The diving area 7 Paradise(27 ° 51 ′ 37 ″ N.34 ° 19 ′ 10 ″ E) extends from the Hilton Sharm Waterfalls Resort to the Veraclub Queen Sharm. Similar to Turtle Bay, the reef drops to a depth of about 11 meters. However, the sandy slope is much more interspersed with coral blocks than in Turtle Bay. There are soft corals, table corals, gorgonians and porites. The fauna includes moray eels, butterfly fish, parrot fish, wrasse and anthias. The drift dive should be based on the direction of the current to be checked beforehand.

Ras Umm Sid

In the area of the lighthouse and the Renaissance Golden View Resort, stairs lead from the El-Fanar restaurant over a footbridge to the popular Diving and snorkeling area 8 Ras Umm Sīd(27 ° 50 '49 "N.34 ° 18 ′ 58 ″ E). The footbridge leads over the reef roof. Usually you jump from a dive boat. Swimming from the beach over the reef roof is only possible when the water level is high.

Strong currents to the east are to be expected at the cape.

In the northwest there is a sand plateau at a depth of 10 to 30 meters, in the northeast there are numerous corals on a sandy slope. Here you can find sea fans, soft corals and pore corals (Porites) as well as parrot fish, lionfish, glass fish, barracudas and mackerel.

Temple

The diving area 9 Temple(27 ° 50 '53 "N.34 ° 18 ′ 35 ″ E) extends from Club El Faraana Reef to Reef Oasis Beach Resort. The reef drops to a depth of about 6 meters on a sandy slope that extends to about 30 meters. On this slope there are three huge coral towers that gave the bay its name. The largest one even extends to the surface of the water.

There is hardly any current, so the diving area is also suitable for divers with little experience and for night dives. Stony corals such as porites and gorgonians are predominant here. Wildlife includes redfire, emperor, parrot, trigger and Napoleon wrasse and anthias.

Ras Katy

The diving area 10 Ras Katy(27 ° 50 '52 "N.34 ° 18 ′ 6 ″ E) is at the extreme southern end of El Maya Bay, west of the temple. The reef drops here on the sandy slope at a depth of about 6 meters. On the slope, which drops to a depth of about 16 meters, there are several coral towers on which gorgonians, table corals and soft corals can be found. The fauna includes butterfly, glass and trigger fish and anthias. Crocodile fish, scorpionfish and blue spotted rays are less common here.

Due to the lack of or little current, this is an easy dive site that is also suitable for night dives. It can only be done as a boat dive because the area is not accessible from the shore.
