The department Hautes-Pyrénées lies in the French region Midi-Pyrénées. It has the serial number 65 and borders to the north Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Gers and Haute-Garonne. In the south, the main ridge of the Pyrenees forms the border with Spain (Region Aragon).

The airport 43.185-0.0019444444444444Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées Airport(IATA: LDE) located 9 km southwest of Tarbes and 14 km north of Lourdes. He is served several times a day with domestic flights from Paris-Orly as well as seasonally with charter flights for the pilgrims. The closest international airport is Toulouse-Blagnac (145 km east of Tarbes).

In Lourdes and Tarbes, Intercités stop several times a day on the route Bayonne and Toulouse. A TGV runs three times a day directly from Paris-Montparnasse via Bordeaux to Lourdes (6 hours) and Tarbes (6½ hours). There is also a night train from Paris-Austerlitz. In addition, there are regional express trains (TER) from Toulouse-Matabiau to Tarbes approximately every two hours (1:45 hours). TER operate four times a day between Toulouse and Pau, which include stop in Tarbes and Lourdes.

The A 64 motorway (Toulouse-Pau-Bordeaux) runs through this department. From here the national road N 21 branches off at Tarbes to Lourdes and Argelès-Gazost, which in parts is developed like a motorway.
