Staple Inn, one of the few remaining Tudor buildings in London
  • 5 Staple Inn, High Holborn, WC1V 7QH (tube stop: Chancery Lane). You can admire the rare selection of buildings built partly with wood. Staple Inn was built in 1585 and served as the "Inn of Chancery" (law school). It was largely saved from the Great Fire and German bombing and the west side is actually an adjacent building that was incorporated with the law school with a unified facade during the renovation in 1936 and the difference can be seen from the roof and the slightly different style. It was one of the homes of William Waldorf Astor, a wealthy American who lived in London in the late 19th century. Victorian house built between 1892 and 1895 by John Loughborough Pearson in a rather eclectic Gothic style. Richly decorated on the outside but even more decorated are its interiors. Today it is owned by the Bulldog Trust and is open to the public during exhibitions, to know the dates of which just check exhibition program.
