Understand
The Solomon Islands became a British protectorate in the 1890s. They became the scene of many battles during World War II, including the most famous, that of Guadacanal.
Self-government was achieved in 1976, but only granted in 1978. Government corruption, ethnic tensions, deforestation and malaria are the country's biggest problems.
The great turmoil that led to the civil war has brought the country to the brink of collapse in recent years and, to restore order, the government has made appeals to the international community and obtained support led by the Australia and New Zealand.
