Ipiales is a city of Colombia, located in the Pacific region.

To know

Ipiales is located on the Panamericana, near the border with theEcuador; the customs offices are located on the Rumichaca International Bridge, 3km south of the center. It is an obligatory passage for those who travel by land in the Andean countries.

Ipiales is called "the city of the three volcanoes" as its landscapes appear dominated by the mass of three volcanoes, Chiles (4718 m.), Cumbal (4764 m.) And El Azufral ((4070 m.), In addition to the peaks of the western cordillera of the Andes which appear snow-capped at certain times of the year.

Ipiales has considerable tourist potential as evidenced by a broadcast on the American channel CNN which included the location among the "nine most beautiful cities in Colombia". The surroundings lend themselves to hiking or biking such as the Guáytara River Canyon, the Puente del Negrito Wetland, the Churuyaco Jungle, the Cofanía Valley and the Teques, El Boquerón and Inagán waterfalls.

In Colombia Ipiales is known above all for its carnival and religious celebrations, in particular for the celebration of Easter and the pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Las Lajas, "the mestizo Virgin", as tradition calls it.

How to orient yourself

As in almost all Colombian cities, the arteries that run in the direction of latitude are called carreras while those that go north-south are called calles. Both are identified by progressive numbers and no longer by names.

The main artery of Ipiales is Carrera sexta (6), about 1 km long and running from Santander park to Plaza Veinte de Julio. This street, formerly known as Calle Real, is lined with hotels, banks and shops. The buildings are modern buildings of 5/12 floors but in the section where the road crosses the center there are old houses of the colonial period with 1/2 floors.

The Square of 20 of July is the old Plaza Mayor, refurbished several times. The last intervention dates back to 2007 and has given it a modern look that contrasts with the colonial-era buildings that surround it.

The city bus station is located east of the center while on the opposite side is the Gran Plaza shopping center.

  • 1 Las Lajas sanctuary (Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Las Lajas) (7 km southeast of downtown). The sanctuary is spectacularly located in a deep and narrow gorge of the río Guáitara and is accessible via a bridge. It was built between 1916 and 1949 to commemorate the miraculous discovery of an image of the Madonna. According to tradition, the image was discovered in 1754 by an indigenous woman called María Mueces and her daughter while they were seeking shelter from a storm. The little girl who was deaf and dumb suddenly began to speak saying to her mother: "The half-caste calls me ..." He was referring to an image, still visible today, painted on the rock that depicted a woman with a dark complexion. Las Lajas Sanctuary on Wikipedia Las Lajas sanctuary (Q2227269) on Wikidata

Safety

Before embarking on an overland trip on the Pan-American Highway that involves crossing the border crossing on the Rumichaca International Bridge, you will need to find out about the political situation. The FARC and other terrorist organizations are active in the territory and sometimes cross over to Ecuador as well as the Colombian army in its effort to thwart the actions of rebel groups.
