Urban centers

  • 1 Ipiales - City of 270,000 inhabitants on the border line withEcuador and with a famous sanctuary, that of Las Lajas, erected in a narrow gorge and accessible via a bridge. The city landscapes are dominated by the imposing bulk of the Cumbal volcano which reaches a height of 4,764 m.
  • 2 San Juan de Pasto - Located at the foot of the Galeras volcano (4,276 m.), San Juan de Pasto (or simply Pasto) is famous for its carnival (Carnaval de Negros y Blancos). Its main attraction is Lake Guamuez (or La Cocha Lake), 27 kilometers from the center.
  • 3 Tumaco - Lying in a deep bay, Tumaco is nicknamed "La Perla del Pacífico" and is famous for its folkloric festivals, such as Currulao and the "carnival of fire". Its inhabitants are known in Colombia also for their passion for football, music and beach life.

Other destinations

  • 1 Sanquianga National Natural Park (Parque nacional natural Sanquianga) - Established to protect the mangrove woods along this stretch of coast and the marine fauna that finds refuge there such as sea turtles, crustaceans and molluscs.
