The Indonesian Province Jawa Tengah (German: Central Java) lies on Java.
Regions

As with the other parts of Java, there are also three main landscapes in Jawa Tengah:
- In the north there is a sometimes narrower, sometimes wider plain, which is characterized by rice cultivation. It's pretty densely populated.
- The south coast, on the other hand, is mostly sparsely populated. Often the forest goes all the way to the coast. The coast is sometimes very rugged (partly with cone karst) and the landscape is usually very attractive. Public transportation can be difficult or impossible to find here.
- Volcanoes and plains in between alternate between the coastal sections. The volcanoes lie in a row in a west-east direction. They are mostly forested and in the lower area terrace agriculture is practiced. In the plains in between there are some larger cities.
The Gunung Muria (also an extinct volcano) is an exception, as it is located northeast of Semarang on the north coast.

background
language
In addition to the Indonesian main language Bahasa Indonesia, the Javanese language is used, especially in more rural regions. This is actually not a single language but three. One of these three languages should be used depending on the social, intellectual, religious etc. position or the age of the person opposite. Javanese has its own alphabet. It is useful for travelers that almost all of the signs are written in Bahasa Indonesia (with their Latin characters) and that the Bahasa Indonesia vocabulary, which has been learned with great difficulty, can also be understood here.
