getting there

by car

The A 2 (Berlin - Hanover) crosses the region in an east-west direction, as does Bundesstrasse 1.

by train

The main line Berlin - (Potsdam) - (Brandenburg) - Magdeburg crosses the region in an east-west direction with regional express stops in Burg and Genthin, among others. From the south you can travel via the route (Leipzig) - (Dessau) - Magdeburg with regional express stops in Gommern and Biederitz, among others.

by boat

North of the A1 motorway near Magdeburg there is only one other road bridge near Tangermünde that crosses the Elbe. However, there are car ferries in the places

  • Rogätz
  • Ferchland
  • Arneburg
  • Sandau.

by bicycle

The Elbe cycle path leads both from the north and from the south into (and through) the Jerichower Land.

mobility

The rail network has been thinned out quite a bit in recent years by the closure of various branch lines, without bus lines having created a full replacement, especially on weekends.

This makes the car the only realistic way of getting from A to B quickly. Those who want to travel more slowly have favorable conditions by bike due to the comparatively sparse settlement, which generates hardly any traffic, especially on side streets, and the flat topography.

Tourist Attractions

The district of Jerichower Land is architecturally shaped by the brick buildings from the Romanesque period, which are often found here. The foundation building is the well-preserved Jerichow Monastery, which is well worth seeing. After its completion (consecration in 1172), the builders found work on numerous Romanesque village churches from the turn of the 13th century, which are worth seeing because of their mostly careful execution in brick and partly because of their furnishings. Some of them are stations at the Romanesque Road. These include the

nightlife

As in the neighboring western Havelland, in parts of the Jerichower Land (around the village of Schollene) the nights are darker than elsewhere due to sparse settlements and sparse infrastructure. This leads to a nightlife of its own kind: stargazers armed with telescopes and look for the best (darkest) observation points. This has meanwhile been ennobled by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) as the first star park in Germany.
