Kętrzyn(German: Rastenburg) is a city in the voivodeship Warmia-Masuria.
background
The city was founded by the Teutonic Order at the end of the 13th century. He built a brick-Gothic castle. After the destruction by the Lithuanians, the place was fortified with a city wall and received city rights in 1357. In 1454 he joined the Prussian Confederation, which submitted to the Polish king. After the Peace of Thorner of 1466 the place remained with the order, but the order state was converted into a Polish fiefdom and finally secularized in 1526. In the same year the Reformation was introduced. The Polish fiefdom ended in 1660 and the area became part of Brandenburg, which from 1703 was called Prussia. In 1871 the place came to the German Empire and 1945 to Poland.
In 1329, the Teutonic Knights had an order castle built in Kętrzyn. Today it is used as a museum. Further sights in the partially preserved city center are the city church of St. Georg and the fortified church with its 48 meter high tower. It was built in the 14th century as part of the city fortifications. Not far from Rastenburg are in Görlitz (Polish. Gierłoż) the remains of the so-called Wolfsschanze, the former bunker of the Nazi leadership. There the assassination attempt on Hitler failed in 1944. When they withdrew, the Nazis blew up the huge bunkers. The remains today attract many tourists. The Great Masurian Lakes begin to the east.
