Reszel (German Rössel) is a city in the historical Warmia in the voivodeship Warmia-Masuria.

background

There was already a settlement here in pagan times. The place was conquered by the Teutonic Order in 1241 and came to the bishops of Warmia in 1254. In 1337 he received city rights and in the 1370s a city wall. Reszel was one of the founding members of the Prussian Confederation in 1440, which submitted to the Polish king in 1454. In the Peace of Thorn in 1466, the order had to recognize this. With the First Partition of Poland in 1772 Reszel came to Prussia, 1871 to the German Empire, 1918 to the Weimar Republic and 1945 to Poland.

Reszel is a tranquil town with 4,000 inhabitants. There are pretty town houses around the market square. The most important building is the square bishop's castle built in the 14th century. A gallery for contemporary art is located in the restored complex. The castle also has ten guest rooms.
