With a height of 841 m is the Bare branches the most famous mountain of the Rothaargebirge. The mountain, which is visited by almost half a million excursionists every year, is located approx. 5 km southwest of Winterberg.
However, the mountain is not the highest peak in the Rothaargebirge (as is often assumed). This is the largely unknown but 2 m higher Langenberg, which can be found southwest of Willingen.

By plane
The nearest regional airport is Paderborn-Lippstadtlocated about 50 km to the north.
By bus and train
By train to Winterberg. From there you can hike to the mountain (about 5 km easy).
Alternatively, from Winterberg train station there is also the option of taking the S40 bus in the direction of Altastenberg to almost the mountain. Then you only walk about a kilometer to the top of the mountain.
In the street
From Winterbereg you can reach the Kahler Asten via the B 480. Just follow the signs.

In the area of the Astenturm at the mountain top there is only chargeable Parking facilities.
- Parking fees for cars: 2 hours: 1.50 €; 4 hours: 3 €; Day ticket: € 4 (maximum parking time 10 hours). If you present your 4-hour and day pass, you will receive a € 1 discount on the bill when you stop at the Astenturm.
- Motorbike parking fees: 1 € for a day ticket (there are no shorter tariffs)
- Parking fees buses: 10 € for a day ticket (there are no shorter tariffs)
Attention: The machine does not change! The device accepts 1 and 2 euro pieces as well as 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents pieces (data status: 05-2009).
If you want to park for free, you have to park your car at the foot of the mountain in the area of the main road. From there, various hiking trails lead to the Astenturm (length about 1 - 1.5 km depending on the parking lot).

- Note for winter sports enthusiasts: You can calculate the expected fresh snow from the forecast yourself.
