Kaiping

Kaiping(Chinese: 开平 市 / 開平 市, Pinyin: Kāipíng shì) is a city in the Chinese province Guangdong and part of the prefecture Jiangmen. Particularly worth seeing and unique are the unique Diaolou towers, buildings in which Western and Far Eastern architecture merge in a unique way.

Ruishi Diaolou

Diaolou

The main attractions are certainly the unique ones Diaolou(碉楼, Pinyin: diāolóu). These are mostly five-story fortified residential towers, which were then built to protect against looters. The oldest of them were made at the end of the 19th century. Around 1,800 are currently still preserved. They have been a listed building since 2001 and have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The four places mentioned by UNESCO are:

  • 1 Zilicun (自力 村) with the Fang Clan Watch Tower in Tangkou township (塘 口镇)
  • 2 Sanmenli (三门 里 村) with the Yinglong Lou in Chikan township (赤坎 镇)
  • 3 Majianlong (马 降龙 村) in Baihe township (百合 镇)
  • 4 Jingjiangli (锦江 里 村) in Xiangang township (蚬 冈 镇).
  • 5  Ruishi Diaolou. The residential tower with its Byzantine roof, built in 1921, is located behind the village of Jinjiangli, Xianggang Township and with 9 floors it is the highest Diaolou in Kaiping. Most worth seeing!last change: Sep. 2015 (information may be out of date)

The surrounding villages and settlements are well worth seeing. You can get there by bus or taxi. These buses start at the two bus stations in Yicizhan (义 祠 站) and Lechongzongzhan (勒 冲 总站):

  • Liyuan. (立 园). The beautiful place is about 1 hour away from Kaiping and also has a museum.
  • Majianglong
  • Jianjiang
  • Zilicun. (自力 村).
  • Chikan. (赤坎).
