background
The city lies on the Rhine, which is also crossed by a bridge. With a municipality area of only 32 hectares, it is the smallest municipality in the canton of Aargau, and it also has city rights. It was founded before the middle of the 13th century at the bridgehead of the Rhine crossing at Rötteln Castle. The exact date of foundation is unknown, but it already existed in 1254 when Baron Rudolf von Kaiserstuhl sold various properties to the Wettingen monastery. At that time, the city itself was owned by the Barons of Regensberg, who sold it to the Diocese of Constance in 1294. During the rule of Constance, the city had the status of a country town of the Holy Roman Empire. When it was conquered by the Confederates in 1415, it became the center of an external office in the County of Baden.
