History

Climate

Cambodia is always hot and humid. The most popular tourist season is the winter season from October to February, when there is heat folds and little water comes in. In April-May, temperatures can rise as high as 40 degrees, while in late summer the rainy season begins and around September, many roads in the countryside become muddy.

Come

It is easy to stay in Cambodia due to the loose visa situation. Unlike in Thailand, it is easier for Cambodia to obtain an “ordinary visa” that can be renewed indefinitely, so there is no need to make monthly visa runs outside the border at all. Most citizens need a visa to Cambodia, including Finns. The easiest ways to get a visa are the “E-visa” which can be ordered on a mobile device or online at evisa.gov.kh, or "Visa on Arrival" directly from the land border / airport on arrival. The following nationalities must obtain a Cambodian visa in advance at the consulate: Afghanistan, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Nigeria.

There are two categories of visa in common use in Cambodia:

Tourist visa (T-class)A tourist visa is valid for 30 days upon arrival. The best option if you are sure you are going to visit the country in 30 days or less. A tourist visa can be obtained in advance at evisa.gov.kh, from the Cambodian Consulate or directly from the land border / airport for $ 30. Swap dollars before you reach the border. There is a notoriously lousy exchange rate at the borders, if, for example, you want to pay for your visa in Thai baht, you pay an insane overcharge for the visa. The euro is not even exchanged at land borders. Add the visa acquisition section.

Ordinary Visa, Ordinary Visa, E-ClassFor anyone planning to stay in Cambodia for more than 30 days. An E-Class visa is valid for 30 days at a cost of $ 35. The main difference between a tourist visa and a class E visa is that a class E visa can be extended indefinitely without leaving the country. Please note that although the Ordinary Visa / E visa is often referred to as a business visa, it does not entitle you to work in the Kingdom of Cambodia. To work in Cambodia, you need a visa and a work permit.

There are several ways to obtain a visa, and prices vary depending on how you obtain one. However, in order to obtain each visa, the following are required:

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months after leaving the country
  • 2 passport photos (scanned version when purchased online)
  • Dollars in cash

Note: When arriving by land from Thailand, officials often ask for a harder price in dollars or baht. If you do not agree to blackmail, you will have to wait in line with the tail.

By plane

Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) airports offer flights all over Asia. When coming from Finland, the most convenient connection is Bangkok through.

By train

From Bangkok passes by train to the border Aranyaprathetin (48 baht in the third class). After that you have to continue a few kilometers to the border Poipetin for example by tuk-tuk (40 baht) or other means of transport.

Move

Cambodia's roads are very bad, much worse than what Finnish tourists may be used to in neighboring Thailand. In many places, the road network is still suffering from civil war damage, and otherwise on paved roads, travel is extremely slow and requires patience.

Talk

The official language of Cambodia is Khmer, which belongs to the Austro - Asian languages. The population of the old French colony also speaks better French than, say, the people of neighboring Thailand, but the traveler is better off in English. Admittedly, Cambodia is also home to a large number of immigrants of French descent, and with them, France may be a more viable option than English.

Buy

The currency of Cambodia is Riel (KHR) with an exchange rate of approximately Rs 5,000 = EUR 1, ie Rs 4,000 per US dollar. Dollars are widely used in the country as a means of payment and reels are mainly used as small money for purchases smaller than one dollar. Please note that American coins are not valid in Cambodia. Local ATMs offer mostly dollars, so instead of reels, the traveler should trust the dollars and use them as their travel currency. Currency exchange is not worth it in any case perform at the border because there the course is lousy and the value of money immediately disappears up to a third off.

In western borderlands, such as In Koh Kong, Thai baht is also widely accepted, but with a weak exchange rate.

Price level

The price level in Cambodia is very affordable. A good-quality hostel can also be obtained for a tourist destination for $ 5. Hostel prices start at around a dollar, but higher standard hotels have correspondingly higher prices. The food is the same price for its parties as in Thailand, meaning you get a meal for $ 2-5. The meals are tasty and adequate.

When buying goods or taxi rides, you should try to bargain at least half off the original price. However, this does not usually apply to meals or products with price tags.

Eat

  • Lok Lak there is marinated meat, onions, lettuce and rice. A nice, supportive alternative to noodle soups - the dish is most likely originally French cancel.
