Kampen is a city in the province Overijssel. The old Hanseatic city on the lower reaches of the IJssel has 32,800 inhabitants and is in the strictly reformed "Bible Belt".

background

Around 1150 there was already a settlement at the site of today's Kampen, which received city rights in 1236. The favorable location on the busy trade route between the Zuiderzee and the Rhine meant that Kampen developed quickly and grew into a prosperous city that was one of the most powerful and prominent cities in north-western Europe. However, when the IJssel was silted up in 1430, the ascent was slowly put to an end. Kampen, which was independent for a long time, formally joined the Hanseatic League in 1441. The city also had a lot of weight within the Hanseatic League and was able to enforce the construction of a bridge in 1448 against the resistance of the cities located below the IJssel. Between 1571 and 1578 Kampen changed sides several times between Spain and the Dutch Republic. The Franco-Dutch War (1672-1679) was the definitive end for Kampen. Not until the 19th century. made the city talk again. The silted up exit of the IJssel into the IJsselmeer was cleared from 1839 with stretch dams. Paved streets connected the city with the surrounding area from 1828 onwards. A steamship line to Hamburg was opened in 1844, and one to Hull in 1847. In the 19th century Kampen developed into a focal point of the cigar industry, which was mainly produced here by home workers. Around 1880 almost half of Kampen's population was employed in the cigar industry. Changes in the law and the advent of the cigarette in the twenties and thirties of the last century led to the almost complete disappearance of this branch of industry - only the monumental factory De Olifant still testifies to it.

Kampen is different. This is particularly noticeable to unsuspecting visitors on Sundays, when the city is barred and barricaded, only deep singing can be heard from the churches. The city lies in the middle of the "Bible Belt" and is a haven of Calvinism. It has three theological universities, a majority of Calvinist parties on the city council and, above all, these hold fast to the sanctification of Sunday. So if you want to have fun in Kampen outside of Reformed houses of prayer, you should not do so on Sunday.

The church building dates from the 12th century and has been extended and changed several times. The tower almost collapsed in the 17th century. In the years 1957-1972 the church was extensively restored.

In 1609 the uppermost part of the tower collapsed and was never restored to its old form. Towards the end of the 18th century, the building was hardly used anymore, which is why it fell into disrepair. Around 1800 it was even used as a horse stable by the various armies. Louis Napoleon, the French King of Holland, made the old Buitenkerk available to the Kamper Catholics in 1809, who - partly with the help of neo-Gothic additions - were able to reverse the decay. Even today the church is a "Roman island" in the Protestant sea.

It was built in 1847 when the Jewish religious community in Kampen had around 500 members. Until 1942 it was used as a teaching house for the Jews. The door on the banks of the IJssel was never used, it is a false door. On the other side of this door was the Holy Ark. In 1930 there were only 68 Jews left in Kampen. And after the war, the Jewish community was as good as exterminated. The building fell into disrepair. It has now been restored and is now used as a municipal exhibition hall. The round stone on the front is a reminder of the earlier function and horrors of World War II.
