The oblast Kemerovo (Кемеровская область) is in the Russian federal district Siberia. It is limited by the oblasts Novosibirsk and Tomsk, the regions Krasnoyarsk and Altai as well as the republics Altai and Khakassia.

- 1 Kemerovo
- the capital and second largest city of Kuzbass. It would be strange to say that it is an industrial city as industry is ubiquitous in Kuzbass, but in the case of Kemerovo the industrial character is particularly tangible and visible. Littered with factory chimneys and shrouded in smoke, the city is cozier than it seems from the outside: it even has a place for pines and rocks, and it is worth coming here to visit the Red Hill - a small and very interesting museum reserve dedicated to the creation of the kuzbass industry. In the center of Kemerovo stands a beautiful Soviet-era building, the only road that connects Western Siberia with Eastern Siberia runs through the city, and there is also its own airport.
- 2 Novokuznetsk - the largest and oldest city in the region is the opposite of Kemerovo, a city that is not inhabited by miners, but by metallurgists. Also, the rare case that the largest city in the region is not the administrative center. Novokusnetsk has monuments from different eras and is easily one of the ten most interesting cities of Western Siberia. In old Kuznetsk there is a fortress from the 18th century. Century and fragments of the district town, while the new Kuznetsk - celebrated in Mayakovsky's "Garden City" - contains one of the best ensembles of Soviet architecture in the country. The city is also the site of Dostoyevsky's wedding. In addition, there is an airport, a good train service, the proximity of Kuznetsky Alatau - and Novokuznetsk becomes the best starting point for trips to the south of the Kemerovo region.
- 3 Anzhero-Sudschensk - is the only town in Kuzbass that is on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Passengers on the trains passing here are unlikely to stop in the city, and not all Trans-Siberian trains have Anzherskaya station on their timetables. But those travelers who decide to come here will be rewarded with curious monuments of provincial constructivism, of which the city even surpasses Leninsk-Kushetskiy in number.

- 4 Leninsk-Kuznetsky - Kolchugino, today's Kuznetsky, was the town of the first Kuzbass mine in the past. Located 80 km south of Kemerovo, it looks like one of the many "tentacles" of the huge metropolitan areas of Kuzbass. Leninsk is interesting because of some pre-revolutionary monuments, buildings in the style of Constructivism, a good mining museum and large memorials of the Kolchugin uprising against the Kolchak army, which took place here in 1919. The city is located at the junction of the Kemerovo - Novokuznetsk highway and one of the roads leading to Novosibirsk.

- 5 Mariinsk - is the pearl of the Kemerovo region. Although it is far from the neighboring city of Tomsk, it is the only truly historical city in its region. There are dozens of merchant houses and carved wooden houses. Mariinsk is conveniently located on the Trans-Siberian and will also be an inevitable transit point for anyone traveling east by car. The infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired, but the general flair and sights are worth spending at least a few hours in the city.

- 6 Meshduretschensk - is a mining town in the mountains. Architecturally, it is not very remarkable unless you are interested in the huge ensemble of the center, which was built in the 1950s on the site of Stalinist architecture. But the landscape of the city is almost impossible to compare: it actually lies between two rivers and is surrounded on all sides by mountains. Near the Mezhdurechensk ski area and dozens of viewpoints, it is a starting point for visiting the Kuznetsky Alatau massif, which is crossed by a railroad going east in Khakassia.
- 7 Prokopyevsk - is the northern satellite of Novokuznetsk, the geographic center of the Kuzbass agglomeration. Here is the best ensemble of Stalinist architecture among the district centers of the Kemerovo area, complemented by several older monuments and quite a decent infrastructure. Along with Leninsk-Kuznetsky and Anzhero-Sudzhensky, this is one of those places that can be called historical in connection with Kuzbass.
- 8 Jurga - is the northern gate of the Kemerovo region, the city on the Trans-Siberian River, where the roads to Novosibirsk, Kemerovo and Tomsk converge. Jurga itself isn't interesting enough and you're only here for the transfer where you can see some original new buildings. Other curious places start outside the city - Tutalskiye rocks (Тутальские скалы) on Tomi (Томи) and the old village at the station of the same name.

The Kemerovo region is populous, urban and industrialized by Siberian standards. It is located in the heart of the "Kuzbass" (Kuznets Basin) region, which is home to the largest coal deposits in the world. Accordingly, most of the cities of the Kemerovo region developed due to the economic opportunities associated with the coal industry. As a result, cities in the region are often quite polluted, although the situation has improved since the fall of the USSR. Visiting the cities is very popular, but not a major tourist attraction in and of itself. But that's one more reason to go out into the beautiful and unspoiled (and uninhabited) Siberian countryside!

There are two airports in the Kemerovo region and in Novokuznetsk. Both of them have only a few flights to Moscow, and they do so at very high prices. The Kemerovo region can also be reached via Novosibirsk, Tomsk and Barnaul. Krasnoyarsk Airport is a little further away and you can also get to Mariinsk every day.

You should prepare for extreme climates, especially in winter you need suitable clothing to protect yourself against the cold. It is helpful, whenever possible, to use local sources of information to be warned of floods, forest fires, etc. There are forbidden areas that you should avoid as much as possible.
The nature is very pristine and represents a danger for the inexperienced. If you stay in the forest, you should watch out for snakes, which usually warm up in the sun on the stones. There aren't many of them around, but some could be venomous vipers. The other problem these (and other regions of the Northern Hemisphere as well) have is ticks. Your bites may be infectious, vaccinations are recommended.
One should never stray further from human settlements without the appropriate equipment and leave the path, destination and intended period of the hike or rafting tour behind with every tour.
