The region Krasnoyarsk (Красноярский край) is the largest area in the Russian federal district Siberia and represents 13% of the total area of Russia. It is surrounded by the oblasts Tomsk, Kemerovo and Irkutsk, from the republics Khakassia, Tuva and Sacha as well as the autonomous communities of Chanting and manners and the Yamal-Nenets.

Regions

Map of Krasnoyarsk (region)

The Krasnoyarsk region is the largest region of central Siberia, it covers a vast area from the Sayan Mountains to the Arctic Ocean. The region is divided geographically and culturally into three roughly equal parts. The southern part extends from Yeniseiysk to Angara. To the north is the taiga Evenks and in the far north lies the rough polar one Taimyr.

The south of the Krasnoyarsk Territory is one of the most beautiful areas of Siberia. The Gebirgstaiga on the foothills of the Sajan is closely bordered by the beautiful forest steppe. The region is deserted in the Siberian way, but not poor in transport. It's just a little more difficult to get around than usual in central Russia. People mostly come here for the natural beauty, although there are also interesting historical cities in the south of the region.

places

  • 1 KrasnoyarskWebsite of this institutionKrasnoyarsk in the Wikipedia encyclopediaKrasnoyarsk in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsKrasnoyarsk (Q919) in the Wikidata database - is not a popular travel destination, although there is a lot to see here. The city is interesting for its historical heritage: pre-revolutionary houses are no less interesting here than in Yeniseisk; among them there are carved wooden and trading houses and even large trading arcades of great proportions. Another, no less interesting variant of the Krasnoyarsk plurality is natural. The city is located on the slopes of the Eastern Sayan, which together with the Yenisei form a unique relief: bare hills and rocks covered with taiga. In Krasnoyarsk it is worthwhile to stay at least a few days, one of which belongs to the suburbs: the famous bridge piers or a drive along the Yeniseis towards the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station.
  • 2 AchinskWebsite of this institutionAchinsk in the travel guide Wikivoyage in another languageAchinsk in the Wikipedia encyclopediaAchinsk in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsAchinsk (Q104232) in the Wikidata database - Achinsk welcomes those who travel to the Krasnoyarsk Territory from the west. It is actually an industrial town that grew up around a huge alumina refinery, although there is also the old part of Achinsk - quarters of high-quality commercial buildings adorned with wonderful stone carvings. Closer to the outskirts is a pre-revolutionary military town, the only one in central Siberia. The city owes another, less traditional attraction to industry - its own tram system that takes workers to the factory. In Achinsk the roads branch off to Krasnoyarsk and Abakan, and the latter leads through the most interesting places of Khakassia.
  • 3 DivnogorskWebsite of this institutionDivnogorsk in the Wikivoyage travel guide in another languageDivnogorsk in the Wikipedia encyclopediaDivnogorsk in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsDivnogorsk (Q135213) in the Wikidata database - is a city on the Yenisei near Krasnoyarsk, interesting with its picturesque rocky landscapes and the proximity to the imposing Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station, the lower of the cascade of three Yenisei power stations. A path from Divnogorsk leads to the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir, a popular recreational area with several caves on its banks. On the other side, downstream, is the village of Ovsyanka, the birthplace of the writer Victor Astafiev, where a memorial museum has been established. In addition to beautiful landscapes on the road that connects Krasnoyarsk and Divnogorsk, there are several places where you can buy yenisei fish or taste it cooked in the best traditions of Siberian cuisine.
  • 4 YeniseiskWebsite of this institutionYeniseisk in the travel guide Wikivoyage in another languageYeniseisk in the Wikipedia encyclopediaJenisseisk in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsJenisseisk (Q135686) in the Wikidata database - is the old capital of Eastern Siberia and the first Russian city on the Yenisei. Yeniseisk grew up with the river trade and completely lost its importance when the Trans-Siberian ran through Krasnoyarsk and the city was shut down somewhere out of the way. All the wooden houses, old signs and the way of life that has not changed for decades are worth, together with the majestic Yenisei, to overcome 300 km of emptiness that separates Yenisei from Krasnoyarsk. Another, no less interesting attraction of the city are the old churches, which were built in a special kind of Baroque style. North of the Yeniseisk all roads end and the real Siberian taiga begins, where there are more animals than people.
  • 5 KanskWebsite of this institutionKansk in the travel guide Wikivoyage in a different languageKansk in the Wikipedia encyclopediaKansk in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsKansk (Q144345) in the Wikidata database - is located in the east of the Krasnoyarsk Territory on the road to Irkutsk. The worst events of the civil war in the Krasnoyarsk Oblast took place here. In recent years, the city has been chosen as the venue for the alternative film festival. The city behind it is less interesting than e.g. Achinsk or Minusinsk, but it has its share of old buildings, also made of wood. Nearby is the Ilanskaya station, where all Trans-Siberian trains stay for a long time to change locomotives.
  • 6 LessosibirskWebsite of this institutionLessosibirsk in the Wikivoyage travel guide in another languageLessosibirsk in the Wikipedia encyclopediaLessosibirsk in the Wikimedia Commons media directoryLessosibirsk (Q157566) in the Wikidata database - has grown with the wood processing industry and has long since surpassed its historical neighbors in terms of both the number of inhabitants and the existing infrastructure. There are decent hotels and good city cafes. In recent years Lesosibirsk has also started to buy its own attractions. It is a city that "is worth a visit if you have the time". Two beautiful new places of worship are among the best monuments of their kind in Siberia, and the local Museum of Contemporary Christian Art in Russia is almost the only one. Not far from the city is a picturesque arch of Yenisei and Angara.
  • 7 MinusinskWebsite of this institutionMinussinsk in the travel guide Wikivoyage in another languageMinusinsk in the Wikipedia encyclopediaMinussinsk in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsMinussinsk (Q158990) in the Wikidata database - is the neighbor of Abakan and the oldest city in southern Siberia. Its fate is somewhat similar to that of the Yeniseisk: in the 19th century it was an important trading center and actually the capital of the vast Khakassian steppe, but then it was disconnected from the railroad and fell into oblivion. Minusinsk has a well-preserved historical center with all the attributes of a rich pre-revolutionary city, including, for example, a theater. No less interesting is the local museum of local history, the collection of which is in no way inferior to that of Krasnoyarsk.

Other goals

  • The 1 YeniseiYenisei in the Wikipedia encyclopediaYenisei in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsYenisei (Q78707) in the Wikidata database is one of the most important rivers in Siberia. It stretches over 3,500 kilometers from the Sayan Mountains to the Arctic Ocean and serves as the only transport corridor that connects the vast northern regions in this large country. In the southern part of the Krasnoyarsk region, the Yenisei is easily accessible by car, and north of Krasnoyarsk on the river you can take a "cruise" on a ship and see inaccessible places almost untouched by civilization.
  • 2 YerghakiYerghaki in the travel guide Wikivoyage in a different languageYerghaki in the Wikipedia encyclopediaYerghaki in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsYerghaki (Q1996240) in the Wikidata database is a mountain range in the western Sayan Mountains, conveniently located near the Abakan-Kyzyl highway. At altitudes of 1500 - 2000 m above sea level one encounters a variety of landscapes: Taiga, alpine meadows, mountain lakes, rocky tundra and simple rocks of characteristic, rugged shape - one of the calling cards of this area. The Ergaki massif is one of the nature reserves. In the valley next to the road there are campsites and a visitor center where tourists are provided with all the necessary information. You should hike through these simple, wild mountains for at least a day, but do not forget to take appropriate precautions and take the necessary precautions.
  • 3 Stolby National ParkStolby National Park in the Wikivoyage travel guide in another languageStolby National Park in the Wikipedia encyclopediaStolby National Park in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsStolby National Park (Q4442880) in the Wikidata database, The Krasnoyarsk Piers are a nature reserve on the foothills of the Eastern Sayan near Krasnoyarsk. It is the main destination in the Krasnoyarsk area. The mountainous landscape is remarkable for its huge rock faces, which attract experienced climbers and ordinary travelers alike. You come here to enjoy the magnificent mountain landscape just a stone's throw from the great Siberian city. The mountains are gradually being equipped with better and better infrastructure and a year-round chairlift. The traditional (and also the most correct) way to visit the mountains is still to hike from town, followed by a walk in the mountain taiga and possibly climbing a peak.
  • The 4 Sayano Schuschenskie ReserveSayano Schuschenskie Reserve in the Wikipedia encyclopediaSayano-Schuschenskie-Reservation in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsSayano Schuschenskie Reserve (Q3457363) in the Wikidata database lies in the floodplain of the reservoir of the same name, at the point where the Yenisei flows through the Western Sayan. It is not that easy to get here in the rugged mountains, because there are no roads and they are not expected here.
  • The 5 Shushensky Bor National ParkShushensky Bor National Park in the Wikivoyage travel guide in another languageShushensky Bor National Park in the Wikipedia encyclopediaShushensky Bor National Park in the Wikimedia Commons media directoryShushensky Bor National Park (Q1391645) in the Wikidata database is a national park in Western Sayan, a scaled-down version of the Sayano Shushensky Reserve. The flat part of the park (Perovskoe lesnichestestvo) is located right on the edge of the Shushenskoe settlement, and you can walk there for an hour. More interesting is the mountain forestry right next to the Sayano Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station, where there is a reservoir surrounded by rocks and the Borus Mountains can be conquered. However, all of this requires at least a one-day hike in a completely standalone hiking mode as there is no infrastructure in the park.

background

The Krasnoyarsk region largely covers the catchment area of the Yenisei, the fifth largest river in the world. Outside of the few large cities, the region consists largely of deserted wilderness - although the region is almost seven times the size of Germany, just as many people live there as in Schleswig-Holstein.

To this day, many of the cities in the region are inaccessible to foreigners, or generally to non-residents. This applies in particular to the large city of Norilsk, where nothing is missed, because Norilsk is considered to be a single environmental disaster. But the port city of Dudinka on the North Sea and some other cities in which the Russian state has or believes it has something to hide cannot be visited by foreigners.

language

Russian. The indigenous languages of the former autonomous districts form a negligibly small minority, especially since these peoples often still live nomadically and are therefore not found in the cities.

getting there

By plane

The international 1  Jemelyanovo Airport (Аэропорт Емельяново, IATA: KJA). Jemelyanovo Airport in the Wikipedia encyclopediaJemelyanovo Airport in the Wikimedia Commons media directoryJemeljanowo Airport (Q1431601) in the Wikidata database.(engl. Yemelyanovo) is a hub for flights within Siberia and to some important cities in neighboring countries. All three major Moscow airports are served. The Russian airline Nordstar has a hub here and also flies to many Russian cities Beijing in regular services.

By train

mobility

Tourist traffic in the northern and southern parts of the Krasnoyarsk Territory is very different. While there are roads, intercity buses and even trains in the south and the journey is not fundamentally different from other Russian regions, north of the Yeniseisk and Angara roads disappear year-round, giving the trip the character of an expedition that requires serious preparation.

By plane

Krasnoyarsk has a lot of local air connections that focus on hard-to-reach northern areas. In the south, however, the demand for passenger flights is low. A couple of times a week there are flights to the villages of Angara Kodinsk, Boguchany and Motygino, as well as to the village of Severo-Yeniseysky, in the taiga. There are roads there all year round, but they are often of poor quality and torn by ferry crossings.

There are airports in Yeniseisk and Shushensky, but there are no regular flights from Krasnoyarsk, and traveling by land is much more interesting.

By boat

With a long distance, the easiest and most convenient way to move around the Krasnoyarsk Territory is by passenger motor boats "A. Matrosov" and "V". Tschkalow "on the Yenisei. They drive from Krasnoyarsk to Dudinka and offer the opportunity for a river cruise, although there will be no time to visit some towns and villages on the way, unless you stay there for a few days until the next ship (and they go once every 5 days or even less.) Motor ships as well as all other (small) passenger ships on the Yenisei are operated by PassengerRechTrans.

Cruises on the Yenisei are a hoax by travel agencies who organize a sightseeing program in Norilsk and then put the tourists on a cruise ship to Yeniseisk, where the bus tour begins. The same can be organized independently and for much less money by taking an ordinary boat ticket. There are offers for cruises on a special, non-route-bound ship with an unusual excursion program, but this event is on a VIP level and such cruises are more expensive than a week-long tour to the other end of the world.

There is no passenger shipping on the tributaries of the Yeniseis, and each other has its own characteristics, because even large rivers such as the Lower Tunguska are only navigable during floods. Motorboats are the main mode of transport here.

In the street

In the south of the region, several paved roads have been laid out, they are sufficient for tourist exploration of the cities. North of Podkamennaya Tunguska there are no roads at all, with the exception of a single highway that connects Norilsk with Dudinka and the airport. Between the rivers Angara and Podkamennaya to Tunguska there are several winter campsites that are located at the ice crossings of large rivers. Up-to-date information on this road infrastructure is available on the Krasnoyarsk Road Administration website.

There are bridges over the Yenisei only in Krasnoyarsk and Divnogorsk. The only bridge over the Angara in the region is in Boguchany. There are dozens of ferry crossings, the schedules of which depend on the area of the Road Traffic Administration and the ferry company.

The southern part of the Krasnoyarsk Krai can be explored by car. The roads (if any) are in good condition and long distances are made up for by light traffic and the view. There are car rental companies in Krasnoyarsk. You can also take a car in Abakan and drive from there to the southernmost part of the region - to Shushenskoye and Minusinsk.

Tourist Attractions

Lenin spent three years in exile in Siberia here. There is the beautiful and only ethnographic museum in the whole Krasnoyarsk Territory, where you can see the reconstruction of an old Siberian village. Shushenskoye, together with the neighboring village of Ermakovskoye, is the southernmost district center of the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

activities

Sayan ring

The Sayan ringSajan ring in the Wikipedia encyclopediaSajan-Ring (Q4409634) in the Wikidata database is a tourist route that goes through the cities of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Khakassia and Tuva, which have preserved unique historical and cultural monuments, centers of folk crafts and archaeological sites. The selection and composition of cities on a given route may vary. Below are the settlements that are included in different routes.

The cities of the Sayan Ring belong to three regions: Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Republic of Tuva, and the Republic of Khakassia.

It is best to travel along the Sayan Ring in summer. The Sayan Ring includes five main settlements - Krasnoyarsk, Divnogorsk, Abakan, Shushenskoye Village, and Kyzyl. The rest of the list (Minusinsk, Sajanogorsk, Kyzyl-Mashalyk, Askiz, etc.) can be disputed: these cities are either not always part of the route, or their visit is not associated with historical and cultural features.

kitchen

A typical dish is sugudai (Сугудай), made from frozen fish that is cut into small slices, seasoned with salt and pepper, and then served with blanched onions.

nightlife

security

You should prepare for extreme climates, especially in winter you need suitable clothing to protect yourself against the cold. It is helpful, whenever possible, to use local sources of information to be warned of floods, forest fires, etc. There are forbidden areas that you should avoid as much as possible.

Nature is very pristine and represents a danger for the inexperienced. If you are in the forest, you should watch out for snakes, which usually warm up in the sun on the stones. There aren't many of them around, but some could be venomous vipers. The other problem these (and other regions of the Northern Hemisphere as well) have is ticks. Your bites may be infectious, vaccinations are recommended.

One should never stray further from human settlements without the appropriate equipment and leave the path, destination and intended period of the hike or rafting tour behind with every tour.

climate

Continental with warm summers and cold winters, with the temperature rising from north to south. However, even in Dudinka, which is north of the Arctic Circle, the temperatures are relatively mild.
